Coastal Survival !

Cool, I hope you enjoy it!

Searching deep in the memory, I recall that Capital Iron in Victoria used to have several copies on a bookstand in the upstairs part on the south side of the building.

I have not been there in years but if you happen to work in downtown Victoria, for instance, it might be worth giving them a shout.

They have lots of cool stuff in the basement as well - at least they used to , I think the cheap old military gear has turned into expensive collectors items !!

Shoot, Pit, with just the stuff you show in these photos, it looks like you could construct a serviceable sled for hauling gear. Might be a little heavy to pull, mind you.

This reminds me of Les Stroud's Survivorman episode along the Alaskan coast - an abundance of useful junk.

All the best,

- Mike

LOL ! Yeah that's one thing about Les, he gets ya thinkin about what junk you can use !!!!;)

Thanks for the photos - looks like an interesting exercise.

Just wondering - why couldn't you cut the rope with your knife? Surely a bit of a sawing motion and it would have gone straight through. Curious about this.

I'm not sure, it was shaving sharp but once it made the initial cut it didn't seem to go through any more !!!!

To always have exelent spelling and grammer are some of the most important things you can aspire to.

Do you mean "excellent?"

Also, you shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition.

You must still be aspiring. :D :D :D

Nice pics, Pit. Love the puppydawg.

I also shouldn't have split an infinitive, or misspelled "grammar" or confused the singular/plural. It's a joke sentence.

I read that some heavy ropes used in shipping are now made of spectra because it is so much more compact and durable. Could be that's why it was so hard to cut. If so, that's a very expensive piece of rope.

Hi Pitdog, nice pics again!

The last time I was on a beach, in France last summer, I salvaged some rope, a plastic jug, a 5 gallon plastic container - and a full can of coke that was still in date! :D. There was the usual scraps of fishing net, wood etc. too.

Have you ever seen the film "local Hero"? There's a funny bit about a beachcomber in that.

Nice photos Pitdog. I always did enjoy a good beachcombing session.

Great stuff pitdog. Thanks for the pics.

Any ideas what this is, I figured it would have made a good foundation for a raft it seemed quite sturdy !!!

Could also be a cradle or bunk for a dingy/tender like a Zodiac inflatable. The shape looks more like the hull of a small boat than a barrel or tank. The felt strips would make it easier to slide a boat off without tearing up the hull.

If they were for a boat, they probably weren't cheap.

Hey Pit, don't be tellin' everybody they can survive over here. We needs our space (and found junk).;):D

Oh, you and Maisy are PHAT!(That's the cool one, I checked with the kids.;))

Good stuff. On one of the Survivorman episodes, Les was on the coast. He found all kinds of useful "junk" washed up on the beach that could help in surviving.

edit: somebody beat me to that ;)
