Just picked up a old spear point Strider collaboration off the forum.

Contacted customer service to see if it could be re-coated for aesthetic purposes (on my dime, and not as a warranty issue).

I was told that they don't offer that service.

I thought the factory applied coatings ?

Maybe ?

I think they state explicitly in their SPA service that they don't do the coatings. They probably could but it seems to do it right they'd have to remove the old coating first. This would be a pain in the you know what, methinks.

I have sent several items to Buck in the past, and they were very helpful.

Perhaps able and willing are different in this case.

Coating fixes were no problem at all sending things down the road a bit to Tops...

When their coating currently is paint, it will scratch off and or wear off, so you are not going to warranty it or repair it. Why, that is all they would be doing.

And, since Buck seems to be going Cerakote crazy on everything, there is going to be some disappointed people when that coating starts to look like crap. Others won't care.

Well, the people would pay to have it done, so it isn't really a warranty or repair issue. On the other hand, I think Buck doesn't make money on their SPA service, so I don't know how much Buck would have to charge to remove the old coating, prep it, and put on new to cover their costs and make some profit - probably a lot.

My thought is: Repair is replace as they have to remove the old paint and respray it. They would have to charge twice what the knife cost to build the first time just to break even.

Agreed. And there might be problems with getting old blades prepped sufficiently such that the new coating will be durable. If the blade isn't free of defects, the coating may flake off easier. I wish Buck wouldn't use so much Cerakote because I like my knives to look nice.

I was blissfully unaware Buck ever collaborated with Strider.

Looks like the finish on these is black oxide.

Standard sheath marks.

Great knife, but thought the coating could be refreshed.

I thought they could re-dip it, or spray it.

I had seen this video by Buck previously, and thought it possible.

I now know for sure.

Ah cool! A fixed blade.

So what about a DLC type coating? I know that Josh from REK Knives REK Knives does batches. You should reach out to him.

I Googled black oxide knife and it showed this. Don't know if it is applicable or not.

from Google : "To refresh the black oxide coating on a knife, you can use a rebluing agent to maintain the dark finish and prevent rusting. One product that can be used is BLACK MAGIC by Kleen Bore."

I was going to check the Buck catalog to see what the coating actually is. What is the model number and year? 890?

Yes, there are other options.

I try to get things fixed by the manufacturer if possible.

The value is maintained this way.

The point isn't that the knife can't be worked on.

The point is that I thought Buck could help me in that process.

I struck out.

I can see why you may have thought this would be refreshed by Buck. Because it is black oxide, not Cerakote. Did the Buck people know that when you were asking?

It is their product.

I emailed their customer service folks that are on their payroll.

I sent them photos.

I told them what it was, and what I wished to occur.

So, in conclusion, Buck does not offer this service.

Other manufacturers do.

Would be good for folks to know so they don't go down the rabbit trail like I did.
