Bill, you recently indicated...
Shop 1 is making progress on the Ang Khola Bowies. We may see them in a month...
I browsed the old message threads and think I found the one that had contained the sketch http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum26/HTML/000094.html but the link to the graphic is broken. Can you please re-post the sketch to refresh my memory? Also, was this batch fully spoken for or is there a chance to still order one? TIA.

Here is the sketch I sent over. I hope this is what we get. A word of warning -- on new projects such as this we usually shoot about 90 to 95 percent. Something is not going to be exactly as we wanted it but this is usually something minor that we can live with. I am almost certain there will be a second run and perhaps more than that. The next run will work out the kinks and our standard will then be set.

Thanks for posting the sketch, Bill. Here I go again.

Brian, I think all these are taken but I'll log you in and we will see if all the takers show up. My guess is we will have another run of these in the not too distant future. We will get you one sooner or later.

Uncle Bill

If there is a second run, I'd like soemthing a little longer (18") and thinner. 0.5 inch is total overkill. But I guess that's what Cobalt wanted.

Say, where did Cobalt go anyway?

Thanks again, Bill. It's something else to look forward to.

Cobalt emailed me and said he would be away for six months but gave no details. I would not be surprised if we got a picture from Kosovo with Cobalt smashing something with his 15" AK.

Uncle Bill

T.W.G. an 18" Cobalt bowie made of thinner steel might work out nicely. I just finished a knife like you described and sent it off with a friend for a 3 week trip to Montana and South Dakota where it`ll be getting a severe real world workout! It`s 18" OAL and resembes a cross between the Cobalt Special and a Busse Battle Mistress with a little more foreward blade cant. Steel is 5160 zone hardened and 3/8" thick with a full convex grind. I tried it out today on some hard dried logs and branches and it worked very well. This is the biggest ,heaviest knife I`ve ever chopped with so I can only imagine what a 20" AK can do!

An 18" 3/8 or 7/16 Cobalt Special would be a very nice piece indeed. Marcus

I am in agreement that a half inch is overkill but that's what was wanted. After we get some test results and customer feedback we can modify if we like.

Uncle Bill

Marcus,

Do you have a picture or a sketch of the knife that you did? Sounds pretty intriguing, to say the least. Tell us more!

Take care,
John Johnson

Uncle Bill, though i have not even received my first order yet, I think I will need a Khukuri Bowie. I am curious as to the Kamis response to a non-traditional design. It would seem 400 years of tradition might come into play when this request was made. I find your sketch quite appealing and am looking foward to some actual pictures.

Sorry John no pics yet. In fact it really isn`t finished yet. I finished the main grind, heat treated it,whipped up a quick grip of pinned synthetic slabs and wrapped it with para cord, oh and made up a multi carry leather sheath...in 3 days.

When I heard my friend was going on this 3 week roughing it camping/climbing trip I just had to send it with him. Basically it`s Battle Mistressesque a single finger groove, some recurve, thicker stock,a very mild clip, convex grind and a distinct foreward cant. A lot of the principles I used came from this very forum. I haven`t gotten a HI yet but I suspect many of them will chop circles around my big bowie. I designed it to sorta bridge the gap between bowie and kukri. Marcus

All these are spoken for at present but my guess is after customer reviews and tests (Cliff has one on order) we will see more runs of this knife -- possibly modified somewhat.

We will have to call it officially the "Ang Khola Bowie," because cobalt carries with it an implication regarding material which is misleading.

Uncle Bill

Since the first of these have come in, I thought it would be useful to have this BTTT.

Thanks, Brian. I've been running all day long and still am. Thank you for helping me do my job here.

As you can see the kamis didn't miss all that much -- maybe close enough for a cigar -- but a couple of the details got lost like the lanyard hole. I think we can get this fixed up when they get back from Dasein.

The shop 1 effort was too far off so we didn't bother to ship them. The four we got were from shop 2 which is becoming THE shop. I now have people who would rather wait for shop 2 stuff than take shop 1 stuff that is available and ready for shipment -- these are people who have khukuris from both shops and see and feel the difference in quality.

The Kami(s)? must wonder what we are doing with the traditional Khukri design. They must think we are a little off center.

Actually, the kamis have a design that is very similar to the Bowie as do most knife making societies, so I'm told. Somewhere on our website I think there's a pix of one -- or maybe it's in the 10,000 file. But they have one, I've seen it.

I don't think they believe we are nuts but they are having a hard time understanding the sketch I sent.
