Is there someone here with any experience with Cobalt Steel? Is this steel made in the US? I have not seen it available anywhere. I had only heard of it until recently and now have a kit folder from Jantz that has the blade of this steel. From what I have seen so far this stuff seems that it may be a good edge holder.

Cobalt steel is a form of high-speed steel containing a significant proportion of cobalt. M-35 (5% cobalt) and M-42 (8% cobalt) are common cobalt steel alloys.

are you talking about something like N690? Bohler makes that, and you can get it at alpha knife supply

Fallkniven also has knives made of a cobalt steel though I don't think the steel is available.

You're probably talking about N690 which makes an excellent all round knife steel .Holds an edge well and easy to sharpen .I used one as my edc for a year and found it's somewhat like 154CM .Very popular knife steel in Europe and Africa.

VG-10 has about 1.5% cobalt. That is 150 points.
( ie.- 1095 has 95 points ,or .95% carbon)

And stevo quickly strikes his palm to his head in a moment of shame for the slip of his tongue.....percentage was left out...
Stacy, I was just making sure your moderating and forum QC was top notch. Mmm, yeah, that's it........;~)

I second N690. Very underrated stainless. Edge holding is quite good and relatively tough.

Thanks for the answers. This kit knife came from Jantz and I got it knowing that they call the steel VG Cobalt and was curious enough to buy the kit to see what it was like. I mainly use CPMD2, CPM154, and CPMS35VN, so I am not familiar with this steel.

Steve,
I was mostly kidding, but the problem in nomenclature often arises. I regularly have heard folks who should know better say that 1084 has 84% carbon.
Now, remember not to smack yourself in the forehead while holding a hammer...like Rick often does. Have you ever wondered why he looks so stunned in his avatar photo?
