Cobalt talked to me at Blade about rehandling a few knives for him so we went around and picked out some green Micarta. He then sent the four knives, a special SHBM with a birds beak end (which the Busse Custom Shop added, not me), two 2007 SE Mean Streets and Culti. He also sent stainless slotted bolts to be used for the handles, I knew I was in trouble then! I hadn't used the slotted bolts before because I knew they were going to be a pain in the a$$ to get the slots lined up and still have the slot show after the handle was ground to shape. So, the following pictures and posts are how I did it.

:D

Here is the SHBM as it arrived with the black and grey G10 handles.

Here is the S.E. MS with the black and grey G10 handles removed. You can see that the double cut was applied after the handles were attached.

The only size of stainless slotted bolts I could find had .216" stepped shafts. These would have made a sloppy fit as the hole in the handle is .250", so I had to make bushings for all three knives!

The micarta handle has been roughed out. You have to do the front and back part first before attaching it.

Next, I had to mill the handle slabs close to the final thickness.

Here they are after milling them down.

Now, onto fixing the slotted bolts so that they fit and work correctly. I had to turn down the threaded side of the bolts to add a shoulder that would extend into the handle so it would be held securely. you can see that in the following couple of pictures.

I then matched up the two sides of the bolts so the slots would all align in the same direction. The next was to temporarily assemble the handles to the knife and do some rough sanding so the bolts were flush with the Micarta.

Then I had to re-grind the deepth of the slots in the bolts.

Here is a couple of pictures of the MS and the Culti in the process. It also shows how I bolt the two handle sides together to match sand them.

Here are the pictures of the knives completed! Cobalt only wanted the G10 handles on the second MS S.E. sanded down, so that is why it is different. Let me know what you guys think.

Wow Tim, that was a load of work!

Congrats to Coblat on a new set of slotted bolts! They look great.

Tim,
Excellent work, and a lot of it at that. I hope Cobalt was thoughtful enough to purchase some fine tobacco and/or single malt beverage in addition to whatever other methods of payment you guys worked out.

Very awesome work! Looks very neet and clean, great craftsmanship as always!

absolutely perfect work. I got them in the mail today and I could not believe the how perfect they were. In fact the slots are all lined up, and I do not know how he did that.

He then told me that he would never do this again and not to ask him again.

Tim has truly gotten to the point where he can literally do whatever he wants. I am so happy he did not touch the steel in any way, however, as reverse chisel points are just not my bag.

and I wanted to add that I truly appreciate the work tim did. We have some very talented people on the forum, Tim and Ban. They work is truly amazing from both of these guys. You guys could join forces and become the Busse custom shop ;)
