Codger's survival tips of the day...

"three categories" - Ah yes: the usual suspects. When healthy young adults start falling over in droves, we can REALLY get worried. That would be like the "Spanish Flu" pandemic.

I admit, never had a flu shot, and have maybe had the flu once. Had something with the classic symptoms, but didn't go to the doctor, so can't swear it wasn't something else.

I work at a school, which is basically a giant Petri dish. In the past five years, I have gotten the flu twice, and spent five days in bed each time. Those two times, I had skipped the shot. Now I always get the shot from the school nurse.

My wife and I had innoculations this Fall. We fly to the Philippines in a few days. Praying we do not contract anything in these couple of days and become symptomatic and end up in foreign quarantine.

We are taking Larium anti malarial for our trip. Denghe is prevelent there. Just because these things are happening does not mean sensible precautions are useless. I carry sanitizer and wash all veggies and fruits.

I never touch those key pads for making purchases with a credit card with my fingers, I always use the tip of my truck key or a pen, those things spread germs freely and are not wiped down very often. The other thing I do now is keep hand sanitizer in the truck, and use it each time after handling a shopping cart or before I eat. Get the flu shot every year too.

Shots are given at work
And if you visit a doctor they give you a shot before they even talk to you about what you came for

Interesting. My physician did not mention it during my appointment yesterday, though there were notices of availability of the inncoulations taped to the glass entry doors. I did see a news article where some nurses and possibly other health care workers had been fired for refusing to take the shots.

Codger, why wont you get a flu shot? I'm just trying to figure out your reasoning. I don't see any religious reasons and you didn't mention allergies.

I just got my shot yesterday, first time for me. Only reason why I never did before was due to laziness. But this one looks really bad, so I'm increasing my chances by +64% of not getting it with the shot.

It does somewhat conflict with my religious beliefs, but that is not the primary reason. I seem to have a natural resistance to flu, but that is not my primary reason. I do have serious reactions to many vaccines, most of which seem to use albumen as the primary growth medium. I react the same way as I do when I take codine. I experience breathing and heart rate problems. And this is back when I had full lung health and capacity. That is a vague explanation of my diagnosis. Prognosis, equally vague, is that it will kill me at some point sooner or later.

But none of my reasons pertain to any of you who wish to take the innoculations. You each have your own reasons to accept them or not. Just as you each decide for yourselves what other measures to take in order to reduce your (and your family's) chances of contracting these diseases. Or any disease for that matter.

You probably know more about what works for you than any doctor. They tend to treat the "average," instead of the individual - lacking time to do otherwise. Ain't like "House" just as hardly ever is crime investigation like CSI.

But I still take the shot.

Never had a flu shot. Can't even remember the last time I had the flu.

Though I've probably just cursed myself...

Got the shot, but more importantly... I wash my hands! Simple as that. I'm always amazed at the lack of hygiene displayed by so many.

It's so easy... And usually FREE wherever you happen to be :)

2597 people died in traffic in the US in December 2010.

The likelihood of you dying of the flu is close to zero, compared to that. Add in smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, cancer, diabetes and obesity, and you'll win the lottery before you die of the flu.

Don't live your life in anticipation of something that is extremely unlikely to happen. That's what gambling addicts do.

I'm not a fan of flu shots in general. I used to taket hem every year, and I used to get sick a lot. I haven't had a flu shot in a few years now, and I hardly ever get sick these days. I'm not saying there is a direct cause and effect relationship, there are quite a few confounded causes.

For one, I have consciously made a strong effort to strengthen my immune system the past few years. I cleaned up my diet, eating local, real, whole foods. I eat a lot of fermented foods, to get my gut flora strong and healthy. I regularly partake of medicinal mushrooms (mostly chaga and reishi), which are immune system adaptogens. These steps have made a profound difference in my health.... I'm still overweight and out of shape, but at least my immune system is strong.

Also, I'm very suspicious of the flu shots. I believe in science, and I understand the notion of antibodies and think there is merit there. However, there are lots of other things they put into flu shots that bother me. For instance:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "The following substances are found in flu vaccines: aluminum, antibiotics, egg protein, formaldehyde, human aborted fetal apparatus (dead human tissue), monosodium glutamate (MSG), and thimerosol (mercury)."
(source: http://www.naturalnews.com/037323_flu_vaccines_junk_science_toxicity.html)
In addition, I did an informal survey of friends on facebook, with about 50 responses. This is hardly rigorous science, but of the people that responded, 27% of people who did not get the flu shot got the flu, and 32% of people who did get the shot got the flu anyway. That speaks for itself.

Bottom line, people have to make their own decisions. This is mine.

I work in a hospital not taking the flu shot isn't an option If I want my job. It makes me sick for 24-36 hours after I take it. We are on flu precations rules , no one under 14 in patient care areas, mask if you think about coughing or sneezing hand sanitizer every 3 foot etc. Signs every where saying wash your hands. For the things you don't see air changes in areas are being checked hepa filters banks double checked for leaks, negitive air flow and positive air flow areas confirmed for correct operation. we have newborns and people over 18 childrens hospital is right across the street.
I think I have saw 3 children being treated at our hospital over the last 4 years it ain't good if we are treating them

This flu kicks like a horse. I missed half a week of work and the weekend is shot. I should have gotten the flu shot. I'm told this thing is a 2 week fight. If this gets worse I'm going in to check my lungs for infection. Don't mess around with a chest infection because they come back if you don't handle them properly.

Thats why I take the shot. Im not afraid of the flu killing me. The flu, the real one,not some bacterial infection or chest cold, is miserable.

Yep. And that's why you wear your seat belt, don't drink or smoke or use drugs, hope to have good genetics, and make good eating habits and exercise. Mitigation of risk. I had a 35 year old mother of two die under my hands on Christmas Day. Two little kids never get to see their mom again. I thought to myself, "tell that little 7 year old girl to kiss her mommy bye before we load her into the truck," but I didn't. That was the last chance she would have ever had to kiss her mommy. That wears on a person. Get the shot. 62% is better than 0%.

My opinion only. You do what you think is best. It still is a free country for a while.
