I want to use a coffe can for a billy can and i have some questions Do the have any coating that could be bad for my health if they are heated. Also whats i a good way to make a lid.

Also i want to shoutout to rescue riley for sending me a mora. It is a very good bush knife IMO

Yeah, Riley is an OK guy I guess. ;) Is that your first mora?

As long as there are no coatings on the inside of a simple coffee can you will be fine. Normally there are not any. Somewhere there's a good link about how a fellow preps his billy cans, but he cooks them with a thin layer, on inside and out, of a food-friendly oil. Then lets them just sit on the fire that way. It's a very good idea!

As far as a lid, just cut the holes for your bail handle slightly low so that you can just keep using the standard plastic lid that comes with the coffee can. Saves you work, and you can store your food in it.

in order to make a lid for cooking with, i use a piece of aluminum flashing that someone gave me cut out with some tin snips until it rests with a pretty good fit on the top of the can. i leave some tabs on the edge and bend them down so the lid won't fall off too easily.

i made mine so that i can work the bail with the lid on, without interference.

i carry mine with a nalgene nested inside, or you can keep the plastic lid and store easily crushed items inside like spooky says...

i just made a very simple one with a coat hanger handle and nested my nalgene inside. And packed it away in my waterproof backpack for tommarows hike.

If the can is steel (and the good-sized ones seem to be), I think they all have a coating. You do not want the ones with the white (plastic) coating. Gold or silver are good-to-go.

I found a pot lid at a garage salwe that fits the large coffee can perfectly.

Bob,

Glad you like it...but don't believe the hype...I'm a jerk...I was getting ready to make one of those billy cans this week....
