Coffee; How do you make it in the wild.

I'd be glad to help, but I don't know what plebian means. I guess that makes me........plebian?

Smitty - I believe that Ellen Degeneres woman and Roseanne Barr are Plebians.... or are they thespians?

Anyway, I like these coffee packs, very small, they come with cream and sugar mixed in. I buy them in a local Asian store and they are plenty good to my taste....

First let me say, that I hate gadgets. I am not going to take any coffee press, dipping strainer, or any specialty piece of gear to make coffee. IMO, that stuff doesn't belong in the woods. Keep it simple.

Same goes with buying single packs at a greatly increased price, just for the packaging.

Instant blows.... :)

ThisCowboy Coffee recipe is excellent, and I prefer it over any other way to make coffee. Electricity available or not. No shot of cold water, egg or anything else need either. Simple.

My 2 cents....

A bit heavy... but this thing boils water in about 100 seconds. 1 can a fuel lasts a long time. I highly recommend it.

The filter unit that Spooky shows is the same one I was going to recommend, it is a GSI H2jO! available at REI. American Bushman did a blog on it.

Andy or Spooky, where did you get the cup? I have been looking for a couple of those to go with my Guyot bottles.

Mocha anyone? :D

AMEN BROTHER!

I usually do the singles, although I don't care for Folger's all that much. I have also done instant and fresh. Fresh more often than not isn't worth the hassle. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy good coffee- I used to work in a gourmet coffee shop. But, I was also in the army, and I learned to drink coffee that was a different kind of bad every day. (If it was really bad, I would just shave with it.) A little instant cocoa goes a long way to cover up bad coffee- plus you get a tiny bit more caffeine, and some sugar to boot! :D

Since teas have already been mentioned, has anyone else tried Sassafrass/Sumac tea? Very tasty, very refreshing and very easy to come by most of the times and places I'm out.

Also, has anyone tried roasting wild chicory for wilderness coffee? I'm not a fan of the "Nawlins-style" brew, but I might settle for it in a pinch.

Man that's what I grew up with!

Me personally I've never roasted the chickory, guess I'm just lazy, but I do like the way it brews up.

I have to be honest with you, that looks like something I pulled out of a Rainbow trout last summer. :p;)

Trust me, If you drank a cup of this you would realize the coffee you are drinking now taste like the stuff you pulled out of a rainbow trout:)

dont drink coffee when camping tho

correction i do sometimes drink coffee, when i am camping in a tent (on some tourist camping place usually full of noisy children, dogs n crap)

but then usually it is instant

i find when freezing in a tent any warm drink tastes excellent, even instant coffee :D

I've been using Folgers Singles for years, usually two bags for a reasonable cup of (camp) coffee.

Several months ago I heard about Java Juice and ran right out and bought a few packs. There was a lot of buzz about how excellent it was, so, as a certified Seattle coffee snob, I was anxious to try it. The experience was underwhelming to say the least.

At our base camp, my hunting partner has a Coleman coffeemaker. It does okay, but it is big and kinda gimmicky. I have seen plastic cones that sit on top of a coffee pot that hold a paper filter and work just like a drip coffee maker. You just pour in the hot water yourself. Campmor has a single-cup version of this. At least this way, you can choose your own beans.

I have two ansers.

In groups, we use a stove top espresso pot, little tiny old italian 2 spouter. Since my granfather in law collected them for years, we also have a stove or campfire top espresso/cappucino machine that's REALLY nice, but weights 3 pounds.

most of the time I use a vaccum insulated steel REI bottle with a filter screen in it. Not a press, but it work fine and I LOVE it. very very simple design, very easy to carry, VERY well insulated.
