Coffee maker suggestions

For under $50, I'd have to say go with a French press or a stovetop Italian coffee maker like a Bialetti moka pot.

Wow apparently this subject is near and dear to a lot of people. For everyones info I tried the cleaning it thing by running straight vinegar through it twice and still not as hot as I like. As for the french press, probably not an option, as we set coffee-maker and I get up an hour before wifey and we usually make full pot, so we both wake up to hot( or in this case semi hot) coffee. Though they have always intrigued me when I have seen them at Ikea. As for the coffee maker, y'all have got me thinking Braun as I having been grinding my beans with the same Braun grinder for approx. ten years.

"Save up; buy one good coffee maker and a good grinder to go with it"

Horned Toad remember the prime directive do not interfere with the inner workings and development of a primitive civilization. There is no telling what kind of damage you may once they are exposed this knowledge.

You have absolutely no right to the destroy their religious faith in coffee that tastes like muddy soapy dishwater. How would you feel if the only faith you believed as true was suddenly dashed to pieces before your eyes.

Exposing them to fact that good coffee requires at the very least a REAL grinder that costs real money may be the final straw that throws them over the edge, are you trying to give these innocent
people a heart attack?

Well I am slowly learning all this myself, just trying to help my fellow man here. I guess we should mention good water and fresh roasted beans are a huge part of good coffee. I have an awesome well at home, so I at least have the good water part covered.

Looks like my Mr. Coffee is fixing to die. The coffee isn't coming out as hot as it used to and as a result is ruining my mornings:mad: So I'm looking for the best bang for the buck in coffee makers, my big requirement is that it makes coffee piping so that it isn't lukewarm after my half and half is added. Looking to keep it under $50 if this helps with suggestions. Timer is also essential as I'm a zombie till caffeinated.

Here's what I've done in the same situation: I heat the water in a large Pyrex measuring beaker. I put it in the microwave for 5" and then pour it through the coffee/filter/basket into a glass container or coffee cup (the glass beaker on mine broke first). You can bring the water to a rapid or rolling boil...if you own a microwave.

Look into the Chemex setup, too. Very easy... basically like two Ehrlenmeyer flasks made into one. Chemex filter goes in the top, pour just-under boiling water in and it does its thing. I hear they make great coffee, and they work well with el-cheapo blade grinders because the Chemex filters will catch the dust.

Grinder and a french press...

+1- here.

Simple, quick. We also have a thermos carafe so whoever is second up in the morning gets a mug of coffee, and whoever was first up can enjoy a second mug.

Mind you, we used to use our Braun with the timer which adds the benefit of aroma before you get out of bed. It's utterly reliable and comes out when we have a lot of people to caffeinate.

Horned toad,
You might have missed it but I stated I have been using a Braun Grinder and grinding my own coffee for about a decade. As for the coffee maker I can afford more than $50 , this is just about how much value I place on a device that has the sole purpose of heating water and then pouring it over coffee in a controlled manner. I could spend more but in the end I will still be getting an item that does esentially the same thing.

I did miss the grinder part, sorry. The coffee maker may have a sole purpose of just heating water, but how many do to right at 200 degree and saturate the grinds for the correct amount of time. I read how you and the wife get up at different times, I would look at something with a insulated carafe rather than having coffee sit on the burner for an hour.

Not a bad idea on the insulated carafe thing, more than a few with insulated carafes on amazon at or around the price point I established for myself.

The insulated carafe on my automatic benefits greatly from pre-heating with hottest tap water. It isn't the solution I hoped it would be...

Hope you find something that works with your preferences.

I have a krups grind & Brew, its basically a drip with an attached grinder. It has been worth the $$ and keeping fresh beans on hand keeps the coffee fresh.

My step father would be lost without his Bunn coffee maker. It keeps the hot water in a reservoir, you pour in cold water, and you have a pot in about twoi minutes. Keeps it scalding hot, too.

I'm not sure if they make them with timers, but if you can pour water into the machine in the morning, you're good to go. Just set up the filter and grounds the night before with a pitcher of water. Stumble into the kitchen the next morning and pour. Go to the bathroom, come back, and the coffee's done.

Another vote for the french press. Also, I bought an electric kettle which boils water quickly.

A trick I read about for use on the drip makers is to put three pennies in a triangle, for stability, directly on top of the electric hot pad (underneath the glass pot).

The copper will still conduct heat but reduce the temperature just enough which may otherwise alter the coffee chemistry and flavor (bitterness).

Course, this was before I went French...

:D

Been using a Keurig for a couple of days now and I'm a believer! Yow! It's like instant coffee with the "instant" but without the crapola taste. I highly recommend the Nantucket blend. The K cups are pricey but the convienence factor is stunning.

subscribe to Gevalia for the "free" programmable coffee maker, thermal carafe, & travel mugs, then cancel your subscription immediately after delivery. the offer changes periodically, but always includes a coffee maker, and their intro-try-to-get-you-hooked price isn't bad. (then give the coffee away to someone who doesn't know any better)
you can repeat the cycle as often as every 2 years if needed.

My advice, use the $50 for another knife and just microwave the lukewarm coffee for about 35 seconds. Your priorities are out of whack!...........:)
