Coffee

What do you guys think about

Cold brew?

These days all I do is add some ground coffee into a jar of water and let it stay in the fridge for a day or at room temperature over night. No heat, no filters.
The grounds settle down and the liquid looks and tastes like coffee but more rounded and less bitter.

Since I'm no coffee expert I'm not sure if I'm missing anything. Are there some possible disadvantages?

That sounds like the right way to make cold brew, it's supposed to be less bitter. I'd say if it works for you go for it.

Stumptown Roasters is local to my area and has some great cold brew products that I'll try sometimes, but I'm really the kind of guy to add cream/sugar to my coffee so it's hard to drink any coffee black, even cold brew which is supposed to be much less bitter.

Cool, thank you. I started it after I heard about it in the radio. Just thought it strange that such an easy method could be better than the ones which need machines and filters. There gotta be a catch or else everybody would do it?

The 'catch' is the amount of work that goes into it: if you want cold-brew now, you'd better hope you planned a day in advance or you're outta luck. With normal brewing you prepare it immediately prior to consumption.

Yes if thats the only downside its fine with me. I was more thinking along the line of maybe less caffeine in cold brew or maybe even bad for the heart like unfiltered hot brew supposedly

Regarding the planning ahead, most coffee people are regulars and some even load their coffee machines before sleeping so it's ready the next morning when they wake up. Cold brewing wouldn't be more effort for them, actually less effort and money. Also if one is the forgetting kind , just cold brew a half gallon jar it's so effortless you could go even bigger without having to spend any additional time. Half a gallon should last a few days. Well for some at least :-D

My new BK2- I stripped the primary grind and left the rest black. It's not completely done, but the bulk of the stripping is done. The metal under the coating was seriously textured- I guess to hold the paint?

I like the stripped Becker look John.
Nice work.

Thanks, Wayne. I planned to just test how well the Citristrip worked on the coating, but it looks good enough....so I just keep it like this.

I finished the most awesome 3 hour surf session yesterday, & came home to a huge surprise: my new sleek, sexy, thin yet curvaceous, Russian bombshell model waiting for me- Miss ZT 0095. It was love at first sight! :love_heart: We spent an unforgettable evening together (over a bottle of Merlot)...

I awoke this morning & after staring into this gorgeous Russian's satin gray mysterious exterior for a few moments & flipping her every which way; I went into the kitchen & made us a cup of Dark French Roast coffee. It just doesn't get much better than this, Monofletch! :couple_inlove: I feel so invigorated!

Got a Hat Trick (3 ristretto shots alone) and it was powerful stuff, probably the most concentrated coffee I've had to date. Bonus, it came with a teeny cup.

I'm starting a test. We all have read threads that give opinions on "bang for your buck" knives, well this will be coffee. I am in need of some coffee at the homestead and have a coupon! Give me some ideas of what you might want me to put to the test. I will probably start with some Yuban or Seattles Worst.

I am open to suggestions..... As long as it's available locally.

Is whole bean a requirement?

You know, Wayne, ....I'm going to say no. I might start with the grocery store "brand" and work my way up.

You never know what you might be missing..... :barf:

Here is what I bought today. The Seattle's Best -- on sale $5.49 and the crap in a red can-- on sale $3.79
This is my new Case Toothpick.

I will post my results asap.

Day one....

I opened the red can.100% Columbian! Oooh! Med/Dark No way!! It had a Flavor Seal! (for $3.79 it better!!!! :D) The color of the coffee inside was pretty light-like the wood in that picture. Not a Med/Dark like the can says. It smelled like coffee. I used my Delonghi dripper set to 8 cups as always. Aquarain filtered water.... Brewed it up like I would anything else in the morning. "Distinctively rich"..I can't wait!!!

First impression- The smell in the room was pleasant. The color was right. Now for the taste..... the initial taste is good (surprise), but after a minute there is an after taste. Kind of like something stuck in the back of your throat.

It isn't as bad as I expected. The first cup went down pretty easy. The second cup got a dash of half and half and some sugar. I think this is how you should drink this stuff. The cream knocked the bitterness down to a palatable level and the after taste is almost gone. Still, it is what you should expect for a $3.79 can of pre ground coffee. Taking this can of coffee on a weekend camping trip. The plastic can would come in handy and as a bonus you get the coffee inside!!!

For all of you interested-YES, you can get this in the Pre measured hockey pucks. :D

I'll give this one :thumbup: out of :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Stumptown is my favorite local roaster, just about any coffee shop that uses their beans that I've visited makes good drinks. Another local roaster I could recommend is Fonte, I work across the street from their roasting operation, while the smell is not very pleasant the local shop that serves them makes some great espresso. I work in Georgetown btw

A couple others who I've tasted and liked have been Tony's (out of Bellingham) and Herkimer (out of Seattle)

TRY Hawaiian Kona Coffee from the Royal Hawaiian Isle. Kona Coffee is the strongest richest full flavor coffee you can buy. After you drink Kona coffee you won't find better coffee unless you buy your coffee from turkey or the middle east. Best coffee in this hemisphere/continent. I mean it. Try the four bag deal of this website and have it shipped to you. Best stuff in the world. It is the only coffee I buy and personally drink.
