Coffee

Got hooked with a popcorn popper, and have graduated to the StirCrazy/Convection oven rig. I've tapered down to about 4 a day ;diggin' quality over quantity these days.....
Any favorite blends ?
My prefrred blend is PB&J (Equal parts Panama , Brazil and Java)
My 2c Jorge

PB&J...that's a new one. I'll have to get some Panama and Brazil and try that out. I had a popper until I burnt out the coils on the second roast. It was $3 at a flea market so that may have had something to do with it:rolleyes: Now I use an iron skillet, which is a little more work and the roasts aren't as even, but until I score another popper it's what I've got.

As for beans, I love Costa Rican. Got a stash of that from the Tres Rios estate that's pretty good this season. I'm also fond of the Kenya AA, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. When I can afford it, a nice Yemen Mocha for some turkish coffee can't be beat.

Anyone know where I can find some of that Arrakeen coffee? I hear that stuff's a kick in the frontal lobes:D

IMO, the conventional wisdom concerning Jamaican Blue Mountain is... well, right on the spot. I got my hands on some medium roasted vacuum packed beans about two years ago, and it was kind of an epiphany. I love coffee (until I drink so much of it that it makes me curl up in the corner with a nosebleed), but this stuff is really unique. Very low acidity. Incredibly subtle flavor.

And for those of you who like to pick on "Dunies," as you called them, keep in mind that Herbert rendered one of the most perfect monomyths in recent history... not to mention all the other sociopolitical, economic and ecological implications. I think it's pfg -- at least the first book.

I won,t be so crude to mention coffee that is the "Cats a$$ "

Does anyone remember what it means to
" Kill the mother who bore the child " ?

Dune references are an important tool to define Dunies and non Dunies in the Cantina. There are also ex-Dunies; those who could stand to live out the rest of their days without further Dune references, who do not believe the Dune series defines reality and all future realities.....

Hmm Ex-Dunies = Heretics of Dune?

Killing the mother who bore the child means to throw out the grounds from the last pot when you make the next pot . Proabably comes from cowboys who couldn,t afford to waste the tiniest bit of coffee flavor . I do it when I am using a pot percolator with a filter or a drip machine . I don,t think I could do it when I make it with the grounds right in the boiling water . I think you get everything you are gonna get out of those beans ..

I'm a big Dune fan. Trying to be quiet about it though...;)

I've been "Cold Brewing" my coffee for over 10 years now using a Toddy Cold Brew setup.

http://www.toddycafe.com/shop/product.php?productId=67

Like the story says - You get all the flavor and very little of the acids and other oils that hide the true flavor. This does make coffee taste like it smells.

Here's how it works -
http://www.toddycafe.com/customerservice/instructions.php

I brew mine for 24 hrs and end up with 2 quarts of concentrate. This lasts my wife and I about 1 to 1.5 weeks. The nice thing is you can make it as strong or weak as you like and you can quickly make a single cup in about 3 minutes.

I just pour a couple ounces of concentrate in my cup, top with water and microwave for about 2 minutes.

Just google Toddy Coffee Maker for the best price. Should range from $28.95 to $35. Get extra filters if you order the coffee maker.

Sorry- there's some history here you are not aware of. A standing joke. It goes back to DIJ and Dune.
We like Dune fine. Many of us have moved on....

Thanks guys for stopping the thread shift that I created.

Someone at work (the crazy canadian lady) was talking about french presses today. I thought she was talking nasty, and warned her about the sexual harrassment policy at work.

Any of you do that ? I mean use a french press to make coffee, not get harrassed at work.

I think the chuck box I've been building will have to have a coffee pot added to it now :(

Oh well, if it hasn't been completed in three years, a bit more delay won't hurt...

I think the french press looks neat . I have only seen them used on T:V: . I surmise that you would get a very intense flavor as the grounds are directly in the water . I don,t know if all the French are like this . I find that they like full bodied flavorful coffee . They have a mix and grind called "Corse" that will open your eyes in the morning !

There is a pressure cooker type affair that I have used a time or two . It has a water container in the base with a filter/coffee reservoir on top of that . You screw the coffee pot on top of this and set the whole contraption on top of a burner . As the water heats up the pressure builds until a critical point is reached . Some type of valve opens and this superheated water blasts through the coffee and up into the coffee pot . The pressur must be amazing as I tested one that didn,t have a lttle screw in knob on top of the pot . Its only a little hole says I as boiling water blasted through it and up to the ceiling ! I have had good coffee along with mixed results which may be attributed to this being a flea market find .Too much trouble for a cup of coffee , but then I don,t roast my own bean either . To each his own .

Oh man, my favorite luxury in life.. coffee. I'm not kidding. I love the stuff, and dont fully open my eyes until I've had a cup in the morning.

I got lucky and realized that my workplace is brewing Maxwell House now, like I brew at home (I'm not picky). I really love Starbucks, but I don't like to pay $2 for a coffee.

My favorite coffee? Brewed in a perculator over a fire. I remember being at my grandmother's farm when I grew up and she had one of those old fashioned turn the crank coffee makers that grinded the beans up to make coffee. It took FOREVER.

She had a lot of moonshiners in her family, including one that still makes wine. I remember this dear old grand aunt and grand uncle of my youth, living back in the sticks. They died before I turned 10, but I remember their kindness. Old uncle used to sneak back in the sticks to drink his moonshine. Aunt finally caught him after many years and made him stop. He died a few weeks later. I turns out that he had tuberculosis for a long time and the alchohol was the only thing keeping him alive.

Sorry for the thread drift.

The french press is how I make the majority of my coffee. There's no paper filter to trap the oils (and therefore much of the taste) or impart a paper taste. I actually didn't like coffee until I was introduced to the french press. I don't mind a bit of sediment in the bottom of the cup, which some view as a detrimental side-effect of the press. You just don't drink that last sip. Bottom line: big thumbs up. Tasty, tasty coffee. French presses require more maintainence than drip coffee because you have to clean the carafe and filters after ever brew, but I think the superior taste makes up for that.

Right on. There's nothing like grounds, water, and fire first thing in the morning. I love the simple ways of making coffee the best. I like a good double short espresso, but simple, brewed coffee is a true luxury.

Man, I love coffee. However, it doesn't really wke me up. It never has. Instead it calms me down and gives me a mild euphoria. I think it's some sort of synergy effect as I am a pretty tightly wound guy.

I believe that's a characteristic response for someone with ADD. They also respond in an unusual manner to other stimulants like amphetamines.

Basically, overdosing on caffeine will probably be very very unpleasant but not kill or deliver permanent damage. However, People do die from it.

Toxic dose The LD_50 of caffeine (that is the lethal dosage reported to kill 50% of the population) is estimated at 10 grams for oral administration.

Activists keep saying that plutonium is the most toxic substance known to man. Actually it's no more toxic than a host of other alpha emitters. One famous physicist got tired of all the activist claims and challenged one of them. He said he would eat as much Pu as the other guy would eat caffiene. He ran the caluclations and figured if he ate the Pu corresponding to a lethal dose of caffiene he would run the same chance of death as a soldier who served in WWII. He thought the benefit to society from shutting the activist up would be worth the risk. Unfortunately he was not taken up on his offer.

Coffee? :barf:

I've never developed a taste for it.

I'm with Bruise on this one. I've never really liked the stuff but sometimes I've dosed myself with it when I had a lot of driving to do and little sleep. Usually I end up popping some blood vessels in my eyes when I do that.

I have recently been enjoying tea. We brought several varieties back from the last few trips to the PRC. The world of tea really goes far beyond Lipton.

But for you coffee afficianadoes, have you ever tried this stuff? I can't speak from experience, but it's reputed to be good. :D From http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/k/kopiluwak.htm

Kopi Luwak does exist, is very expensive, and is made from coffee beans passed through the digestive system of an Indonesian animal, but it's more like a cat than a monkey. According to a feature article by the Manila Coffee House, which sells the stuff, the people who harvest the digested beans don't really have to pick through cat litter to get it. The animal processes the beans and excretes them whole, unscratched, and without dung.

The animal is a palm civet, a dark brown tree-dwelling cat-like creature found throughout Southeast Asia. The scientific name is paradoxurus hermaphroditus.

According to the Manila Coffee House, the palm civet just happens to like to ingest the ripest and reddest coffee beans, which also happen to be the ones best for brewing. The cat eats the outer covering of the beans in the same way that is accomplished by de-pulping machines. Something happens to the beans in the journey through the cat's intestines that gives it a flavor that is celebrated by coffee drinkers.
