I've been working on this kephart-ish design and wanted some input if you folks don't mind. As it is in the drawing the handle from the choil to butt is 4 5/8" is that too long? I was thinking 4 1/4" as an alternative. The other thing is should the spine and the handle be a straight line? In the picture were the blade and the handle meet is at an angle. Thanks for the input.

I find coffin handles work best on symmetrical blades more like daggers. The handle works best if it can align with the blade centerline as close as possible. They work OK for big bowies, too. I also thing they look best with multiple small rivets around the perimeter, or asymmetrical rivet placement. Three down the center will certainly work, but it does not seem to match the handle style nearly as well as a different arrangement.

Look at some photos of coffin handled knifes for ideas on how to make them blend.

Gotcha Stacy, I might nix the whole coffin shape and just round it out. Or start over completely. My goal is to make a sort of all around small job kitchen knife. I'm trying to use up some 1.5" wide stock I have laying around. If you have any ideas for that type of knife, I'd love hear them!

Here's a mini Bowie design I'm going to be starting soon. I think it will turn out pretty well. Just thought it might help a bit.

Thanks Ian, I see how have the blade centered with the handle makes more sense.
