It was the coffin handled bowie that caused me to get into knives. I was looking for a knife that would look like a cowboy era knife and I went into AG Russell's in Arkansas to look at knives. This was at least 10 years ago when he first moved into his new building by the bypass and he actually had a Cold Steel Laredo Bowie on the seconds shelf but I did not get it because I wanted to study a little more.
A few years later I was back in there and I still was not yet hooked on knives but I wanted to look around and then I seen a knife that I really wanted and it was the Canal Street Cutlery 1873 Bowie and I really loved it but I did not buy it.
Still a few more years pasted and I went back into AG Russell's to look at the 1873 Bowie again and I almost pulled the trigger but could not justify the price which was only about $180 but it was a lot of money for me at the time and as I was looking around some more the woman behind the counter asked me if I liked big knives and I told her that I sure did. Now this is right when Becker hooked up with KA-BAR and he was having his knives made by them. Well the woman reached into the glass cabinet and pulled out a big bowie. I freaked out as to what it was and it was the BK9 and it was only $79. I asked if they did lay-a-way and she told me yes so I put $20 down and a week later I put $20 more down and then a week later I picked it up.
From that moment on I was hooked on knives and I have been a knife junkie every since. I am happy that I never bought the Laredo Bowie as I cant stand Cold Steel but I do wish I would have bought that Canal Street Cutlery 1873 bowie and I am happy that I bought the Becker BK9 as its a fun knife but in the end I have found that for an all around strong bowie that I prefer the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider and this is after quiet a few years of studying what is quality and what works but it all started from wanting a coffin handles bowie. Once you scrape that black coating off, the SP10 is a great knife and pair it up with a KA-BAR USMC MKII you have the perfect set up.
You can't talk about coffin shaped knives without talking about the coffin jack, and you can't talk about a coffin jack without talking about the Case/ Bose coffin jack.
I doubt I'll ever own one, but it is close to a grail to me.
