I noticed, somewhere (a picture on BF I'm pretty sure) a picture of an Opinel bearing the Coghlan trademark. I did a quick search and found that this particular variation of Opinel is an exclusive to Coghlan and is sold blister packed. I'm curious as to how many here have one of these collaborations. It does seem like kind of a necessity for an Opinel collector IMHO, so I may have to track one down. With that being said I was curious as to if there is any preference to this knife seeing as it has a bit different blade and handle profile than your run of the mill Opinel. Again I know that this is old news and apparently Opinel and Coghlan have been putting out these knives for quite some time. But a quick search of the forums turned up a few dated post in regards to this knife.

I never knew that the Coghlans knife varied from the standard Opinel. Very curious to see a side-by-side comparison, if anyone owns both versions.

I'm sure I've owned the Coghlan's at some point, but not recently and not at the same time as another Opinel.

based solely on an image search and holding my regular opinel up to the screen i cant tell much difference in the blade. the handle looks reminiscent of a spanish 'navaja'.
interesting.

Is this the handle you mean? They use it for the filet knife style and for this Garden Knife.
(Thanks to Bob W. for the picture.)

I have one of the Coghlan Opinels that I got from one of the local sporting goods stores just to try it out, I really like it, I never really noticed the difference looking at pictures of the regular ones, but I've never seen a regular one in person either, I like the spear point style blade shape actually.

Here's the packaging picture from the Ccoghlan's website.

It does seem to have more of a curve to it than the standard Opinel. Seems to be the same blade, but difficult to tell. Maybe the Coghlan's handle is a bit slimmed down?

The Coghlan's I have (I think #7) has an identical blade, the only differencei is it's tapered at the end of the handle rather than flaired. I like the looks of them and they filt better in the pocket, but are definitely not as comfortable as the standard handle.

I have one. It's pretty much as depicted in Bob W's post, a regular carbon steel yagatan blade mated to a handle shaped like the Garden knife. IIRC, Coghlan's offers them in three sizes. Mine is a No. 7, which I think is the smallest Coghlan's offers.

Coghlan's offers them in three sizes.

I need to pick those up for my collection. Well, I won't call it an official "Opinel Collection" until there's at least 25. But I'm getting close. I just love the darned things. :)

Are the Coghlan's models stainless or carbon? Their website doesn't say, and I don't see it on their packaging - not on the front anyway.

I have one that looks like that blister pack picture, it came in the blister pack. I got it when a local store was going out of business and had it marked down to $5. Best $5 knife I ever bought.

I have one from the flea market, a #7 (3-inch blade). I was going to say I prefer feel of the tapered handle, but I never used the standard enough to compare. The Coghlan is definitely slim and light in the pocket. Sorry about the extra knives in pic below.

I bought a Coghlan labeled Opinel back around 1980 and it had the conventional handle. Had that knife until about 3 years ago - lost it around the house or yard. Hope that it turns up one day.

i found this Papillon(gardening products) knife
stainless blade size of Opinel 6

I never gave it much thought, but I didn't realize that was the exact same handle featured on the Garden and fillet knives. Also I'd have assumed that the blade steel would've most likely been their Inox instead of their Carbone. All in all a really cool knife for the masses. I'd like to acquire one, however the shipping would nearly rival the cost. So I'll hold off for a while, anyhow.

Now, if I could get the Garden Knife in carbon, I'd be happy!

Off to search the internet...

So far as I can tell from a Google search the only way to get the curved and tapered handle and the carbon steel blade combo is with the Coghlan's sold Opinel versions, at least in the USA. Availability may be different in France or other European countries but nothing in the way of that combination is shown on the Opinel importers web site.

Also per the web site none of the fancy wood or horn handled Opinel versions are listed as available with the carbon steel blade. The carbon steel blade option seems to be only available in the Beechwood handle standard least expensive versions.

Opinel makes a slim knife with the same handle shape (same length designations, e.g. No. 8 slim, No. 10 slim) - it looks similar to the Coughlan to me (though the Slim has a different blade profile), but do not have a side by side.

No. 8 Slim
