Coghlan Opinel

for food prep, would you recommend the garden knife or the standard no8? I have the regular one, but this thread has got me thinking. Plan to just sand down the handles of mine to be a bit slimmer.

If your asking me, the slim handles just feel better in my hand. I would prefer the Garden Knife's SS spear point blade as it's shape reminds me of my old Victorinox paring knives that I used for many years.....

For food prep I'd recommend a fixed blade. Getting food 'goo' out of the joints and ring lock is not easy.

Opinel makes paring knives.

I have a 7. It was my first Opinel. It is a handy, small blade. It seems smaller than it actually is. Comparable to a #73 GEC blade size.

It works great for edc. For harder cutting chores, I put refer a 10. It has a lot of surface area for my hand.

I bought this Coghlans #7 at a Sportsmans Wharehouse a couple of weeks ago just to try the slim handle & the lock ring.(my last was a #6 w/o a lock ring)
I like it's feel in hand & the raised collar on the lock ring acts as a better than nothing rest/guard for my index finger helping to keep it away from the rear of the blade.
I sanded it down & stained it,added the notch & flattened the sides a bit to slim it up.

Now for my next Opi,hmmmmm……

Yes.

I use a folder for food only if I have no other option.

The Sandvik stainless on the Garden spear takes a great edge and makes a much better steak knife than those serrated monstrosities they pass out in restaurants these days.
Oh, and did I mention that it's stainless? ;-)

Reviving an old thread. I have 3 of the Opinel Knives from Coghlans with the tapered handles and carbon steel blades. Sizes 7 8 and 9. The 2 larger sizes don't have the lock notch that keeps them closed. Any idea how old they are. I bought them as users. They are all in great shape. I prefer the carbon blades to use.

Nice to see an old thread pop up, but it's decidedly lacking in pictures!!
message to "Opinel for Coghlan's" collectors; please post some pics for us!!:(

Thanks for the info. I'm not a paying member as of now I was just looking for some info on these knives. Not much to be found on two of the sizes I have.
