Cold blued Beckers

I cold blued the 14 i modded a while before i ever modded it, it held up pretty well... But like nearly every type of "coating" it will wear in use. When i modded it i decided to acid etch and stonewash it though... But here it is before the acid/stonewash....

And now...

Quick heads up.
I stored the blued Machaxen in it's factory sheath.
I haven't had time to use it since it was blued. Sad, I know....
Anyway, I pulled it out tonight and there was, what I can only explain as a filmy layer of rust. Yikes!!i should've taken a pic.
A scotchbrite and dish soap took it right off.
I wonder if the blueing had some kind of reaction with the steel...

I pulled out the Brute, which I had stored in my Kelley Customs leather sheath, and it looked just fine. No rust.
Which is wierd because I've had a lot of issues with the Brute rusting. Hmmmm...

I'm gonna store the Machax outside of the sheath and see if there are any more issues.
I'll keep you all posted.

Anybody have any idea why the Machax started to rust and the Brute didn't? I had them both stored inside the same toolbox.
I never had an issue with the Machax rusting before I blued it.
I thought it was nice and dry before I oiled it and put it up.

Do let us know. And hopefully someone will have an idea that might actually explain what happened.

Unfortunately all bottles of oil have small amounts of water in them. The more oil you use the more water you get on your blade. I've had the same thing happen to a few blades. Try coating them, let them sit for a few, them wipe off the remaining oil. This should get rid of any excess moisture that may be on the blade and it will still be protected.

Bluing IS a reaction with the steel, not a coating. More than that, it's a controlled form of rust, oxidation of elemental iron to magnetite (Fe3O4); red rust is Fe2O3.
Leather holsters are known to be hell on the finish of blued firearms, since they absorb and trap moisture against the surface of the steel. Bluing by itself is a pretty weak form of corrosion protection, it has to be kept oiled in order to work.

This leads perfectly into a question: has anyone rust-blued their Becker? It's time consuming, but it's a lot more durable than cold bluing and doesn't require the noxious chemistry of hot bluing.

Heck, has anyone parkerized their Becker? That I would love to see.
