I noticed what appeared to be a small crack in the blade of my new knife. I don’t know a lot about Damascus Steel but this is the reply from the knife maker. Does it make sense to any of you knife guys? I’ve attached a blown up picture of the spot on the knife. I’ve decided not to name the maker yet

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for reaching out! What you have there is what's known as a "cold shut", which occurs pretty often in Damascus, in fact it's a good way of knowing that what you have is genuine Damascus and not Damasteel or some other faux Damascus. It's usually just a place in the steel where there was maybe a little bit larger deposit of nickel that flaked away during the grinding process. It has been clear Cerakoted over and please rest assured it is not a crack or de-lamination and will not weaken your blade in anyway.

We want you to love your knife, so if you would prefer to exchange it we would be glad to do that for you. You would be looking at probably around the end of March for turnaround time. Let me know!

Sincerely,

They made it right. What’s really crazy is that they are well known and have been in business over 40 years making custom knives.

But they did make it right and apologized for making the statement about having a cold shut is how you know your knife is true Damascus Steel.

At the end of the day they made it right. But I did feel like I got played and that they wanted me to keep a flawed knife.

yeah I’m not trying to drag them through the mud. I just wanted feedback to see if they were pulling my chain.

You make some beautiful knives. I love your Harpoon Tactical Utility knife.

Thanks i was just repeated what they Said it was and was curious if it was accurate that having it in the knife is what would let
Me know it was true Damascus Steel

Defining 'True' damascus steel is as nebulous as determining what is a 'Custom' knife, or what is a 'Bowie' knife, or what is 'Handmade'.

Damasteel is offered EXCLUSIVELY from the most expensive folder maker in the world: Michael Walker. 'Faux' doesn't seem to support his choice.

I'm guessing depending on your reaction (they) thought, let's try to smooth this over and deflect it. See what comes back. I really don't think it's problematic, yet it is there.

Determining 'handmade' would tend to include visible imperfections. That's a well-known thing.

Sounds like a quality business, though. Quick to resolve properly.

The exalted king of damascus is correct, it is a slag inclusion. Way to pick up on the details Devin. Cold Shut or slag inclusion, it's less than perfect. Enough said, he made it right. Good on him.

Yeah, not sure why the maker used that term.

Thanks Mark for all your unselfish contributions here on the forum.
