Cold Shut in new custom knife

They made things right....after trying to bluff you into keeping a flawed blade by providing a shady explanation that said flaw validated the authenticity of the Damascus.

This still wouldn’t sit right with me to be honest. In my eyes, there was still a bit of trickery involved here that was only resolved after you stood your ground. I would be hesitant to do business with this maker because of the way this was handled but admittedly I am overly cautious.

Disclaimer - the above statements are my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it.... nothing. ;)

i have not had a return ( yet !!) but if i did, you would be next on the bench, not the end of march. glad it got resolved though.

I like the way you conduct your business Sir. I think the “end of March” thing was another attempt by the maker to make seeking an exchange an unattractive option. The last thing someone wants to do after waiting for a knife to be built is receive an inferior product....then wait some more. The maker made a last ditch effort to talk the OP into keeping the flawed knife. Just my opinion of course.

^^^ "Damasteel is offered EXCLUSIVELY from the most expensive folder maker in the world: Michael Walker."

...not true Coop,Damasteel can be bought through several sources, including directly from them ;) http://www.damasteel.se/distributors/ ...just sayin' ;)

Oops. I worded my response imperfectly. What I meant was that MW USES Damasteel exclusively on his world-class folders, and he would not consider it a 'faux' steel.

You are right. Todd Begg is the USA distributor now? Among other sources. Got it!

I think you nailed it.

Now what I am curious about is how many private messages the OP has received from folks wanting to know who the maker was . . . so they can avoid her/him/them.

I got what you meant the first time and I'm sure I'm not alone. No biggie.

I have a couple of "high end" folders with Damasteel and have seen a lot more high end folders with Damasteel. But those are not what I would call "user knives." And I doubt that too many $30,000 Michael Walker folders are EDC knives subjected to a lot of real world cutting, and resharpening, etc. So although Damasteel looks very nice, and holds that appearance with time and elements, and can take a good edge, I really have no idea how well it performs "in the real world" as a cutting steel. Maybe (?) that was what the maker was talking about by calling it "faux." Or not.

Damasteel is a fine performing steel. It’s not fake either. The layers are created much the same way we use canister Damascus, or like powdered metallurgy with two different steel chemistries to get contrasting layers. Once solidified, the patterns are created the same way we traditionally manipulate the steel. I looked it up a while ago and have working with damasteel on my to do list. I didn’t have a dewar and LN when I looked it up, but do now.

Coop means that Michael Walker only USES Damasteel on his knives with damascus blades, same way that if I am having a knife made with stainless damascus, I spec that it be Devin Thomas Damascus....and have never gotten a piece with a flaw in it, as far as I can see.

For carbon damascus knives that I buy/order, they are usually ABS MS pieces and the maker is to create the damascus in-house.

I agree 100%. I would drop everything I’m doing and provide an upgrade to a better knife or higher end handle materials at no charge too. Ethical business practices seem to have gone away in the last couple decades.

I have had very few cold shuts in my time, but they suck. I lost a $700 sale at Blade back in 2103 to a Chinese dealer because the blade had a TINY shallow pinhead sized hickey that I didn't even notice until long after I finished the blade. Damascus shop knife!!!!:(
Edit. Also, Murphy's law applies because your typical cold shut is in the middle of the billet so you don't know that it is there until you are almost done. :p

I remember us talking a few years back about a custom damascus knife from a certain high speed/low drag maker that had a VERY deep, ugly and noticeable cold shut/post hole right in the middle of the scary ground bevel and it still sold for over $1500!!! Sheesh.

Damasteel is one of my very favorite stainless Damascus steels....takes a tremendous edge and performs extremely well....gets as sharp as any steel I’ve had.

I’ve heard the same. It’s tough, and takes an edge well.

It is RWL34 (bright steel) and another steel PMC27 (dark) that has a composition that looks quite similar to a PM version of 12C27. That stuff should be fairly tough. IIRC, Damasteel was the first time that I saw reference to a decent amount of moly being what got you the light color.
damasteel is actually RWL 34....nothing to sneer at

They are upgrading my handles and allowing me to select. I didn’t mention that.

i agree completely that this is what they attempted to do.

They did tell me last night that I was moved to the front of the line. We shall see. They also told me I could select upgraded handles.

They probably lost some potential future business from the members of this forum as well.
