I just bought this knife today and it was a spur of the moment purchase. I've sorta been neutral when it comes to Cold Steel as I have only owned a couple in my lifetime. I have always liked the look of the AK-47, with the short, but thick, and well defined clip point blade. I am even alright with the handle, but that Grivory thing had to go! I removed it with a Dremel tool and I like the looks a WHOLE lot better. Here are some specs on the knife, and then I'll give some initial impressions;

Specifications:

AK-47

Blade:

3 1/2"

Overall:

9 1/4"

Thick:

4mm

Weight:

7.6 oz.

Steel:

AUS 8A Bead Blast Finish

Bead Blasted Aluminum

As said, I removed the Grivory at the rear of the knife and made it flush with the edges of the handles as this does act as the back spacer. The aluminum handles are inlet and full steel liners are present. The thickness of the scale is .180". With the Grivory removed, the knife sits in the pocket with less of it sticking out which I count as a plus. I usually like nothing sticking out, but with the clip placement on this one, you are going to have some of the handle sticking out, but at least the part that does is not very wide.

In hand this knife feels good to me. I do have a problem with reaching the thumb plate to open it as I have to change my initial grip to get my thumb where it needs to be. The knife is flat enough to ride comfortably in my pocket and does not print from what I can tell, but I am wearing cargo shorts which tend to be able to hide a lot of things. Come jean time, this knife may "show itself" a little. With the thumb plate you can wave it open, but I have never had a knife that could that so I will be slow in learning that particular practice.

Out of the box the fit/finsh was pretty good. The blade was perfectly centered within the blade channel, and when I tightened it to my desired setting, it remained centered. The Ultra Lock is no Axis Lock as it is not as smooth, although it does seem to hold the blade closed so that it takes more effort to open the blade. The blade should not accidentally fall open on this knife. I had read elsewhere that unlocking can sometimes be difficult with one hand as the lockbar does not want to move all the way to the rear, and I have found that to be the case here. Not a real problem for me, but might be for some. I'm guessing that the lock will wear and smooth up as time and use passes.

Blade grinds were good and the knife easily shaved right out of the box. I will still hit it a few licks on my Sharpmaker with the white stones because that is what I do.

All in all I was pleased with the purchase, especially at the price I got this knife, even if it was spur of the moment. I'm going to have to renig on my promise to carry my Fallkniven PXL all month as I want to carry this one a few days just to see how much I like it.

So, there you have it. Anyone else have one of these, if so, what are your impressions?

Love it. I feel it is very strong folder and I like the grip you can emply. However I left my grivory atthe rear intact as it helps retain my knife when it hold it in the back end. When gripped in the pommel area it is very ergonomic and the shape of the handle enables me to exert force through my palm when stabbing.

When gripped at the closest to the blade or 'choking' it, I feel the guard is very well designed. There is absolutely no risk of my hand sliding to the blade during stabbing.

The shape of the blade is very utilitarian to me. The steel keeps it's edge well enough and is a useful shape for cutting. The lockup is very very solid but the unlocking-with-one-finger is sometimes nigh impossible. It never improved even with loads of opening and closing for me so I rounded the locking-bolt to fix the problem.

Good price and strong design. I particularly like this aluminium handled version and have no need for the extra grip the G10 version may give. Enjoy ur folder and let us know how it fared as time goes by.

Been carrying it since yesterday afternoon and I really like the flatness of it, and the flatness may be more noticable due to the width of the handle. I thought about just taking it completely apart and doing some polishing to the pivot and locking area to see if I can smooth things up a bit. I always like to tinker, and now that I have a Dremel tool I can do some real "damage" to my knives!!;):D

Tinkering is my pastime :)

Yup, try smooth up the inner side of the lock holes in the SS liners. Be careful and not make my mistake where In took too much material out. I got vertical bladeplay after that.

Also it's the edges of the D-bolt (locking mechanism) that keeps getting stuck, you might wanna round up the edges of the D. This fix is more difficult.

Good luck.

Took it apart last night and polished up the liners at the pivot area, the pivot bolt, the bronze washers, but I ditched the teflon because it was paper thin and torn, the blade tang, lockbolt areas of the liners, the lock bolt itself, and the areas on the blade tang where the lockbolt travels. Put it all back together and had a bit smoother action but I'm not sure it was enough to warrant the time and effort I put into it! Also, I think the right omega spring broke on me, although the left hand spring is still going and actually not much difference in the lockbar movement as the single spring still snaps the bar up and back as if there were two springs operating! Anyone ever had any trouble with these springs and anyone know if Cold Steel will send out springs? Anyway, thought I would still go ahead and carry it as I really do like the ergonomics of this knife and I absolutely love the blade shape. I would love to see a Demko custom of this knife!

I got an idea I'm keeping in case my springs/blade/lock/whatever broke. In Ebay they are selling cheap AK-47s from Taiwan. I'm going to get one and use it for parts. Try this out if Cold Steel don't send you replacements.

I'm waiting for a cheap old Japan edition of Cold Steel's Recon 1s (the Zytel and 440A version, currently kinda cheap) and I'm gonna use the rounded lock-bolt and replace my AK-47's crappy bolt. I will get smooth unlocking after that. I know cause I did the same thing to fix my current edition Recon 1.

Demko's lock design (Tri-Ad) is very nice if I'm correct in assuming that he's the designer. The American Lawman has caught my eye cause it's got the same blade profile as the AK-47.

Let us know how it turns out with Cold Steel's customer service. Hope it turns out fine.

Hate to say it but I sorta gave up on the AK-47 for the moment. It began acting up as far as the lockbar as it started sticking and wouldn't allow the blade to be engaged. I had to screw the lockbar out to the point where only a couple of threads was holding it on. Sorta got disgusted with it. Actually went back to the store and did another impulse buy and brought home a Kershaw Groove, and it has been NO trouble at all to tinker with.

Btw, the American Lawmen is a good looking knife and one I would be willing to take a chance on.

I bought an AK47 a year ago, and tested it for a magazine.
I threw the Grivory backspacer too. The "wave hook" didn't work perfectly (i must rounded it with diamond files). The lock was too rough and jammed - it took ~300 opening to break it. The handle easily became slippery without gloves. :thumbdn:

It would be a great HD folder without these problems - but now the AK47 sits in my collection.
