I am interested in buying the ak47 but there is also many different knives that can serve the same purpose of a large folder. Please say how it performs and any other recommendations.

I would check out the Cold Steel Recon 1 or American Lawman. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Its a pretty sturdy folder, the g-10 is very grippy, and comes razor sharp. The wave feature is cool, and the handle is ergonomic. The black teflon coating scratches off really easily, and there is a tiny bit of play in the blade. The triad lock is really beefy though, so I don't worry about it failing at all. Aluminum pommel can be used as a glass breaker. Overall its a great value for a tactical knife considering the features. I'm not a fan of Cold Steel marketing, but IMO they make some decent knives. The Ontario Rat folder, Endura 4 (there's a model with wave feature), Spyderco Resistance, and Kershaw Blur might be good alternatives.

I own both the new and old style AK-47's from Cold Steel and IMO, they`re well built knives that can fit both the tactical and hard use roles. As EDC knives, they`re ok. The mini AK-47 would be a better choice for EDC, IMO.

Cold Steel's AUS-8 is a very good steel, keeps fine edge. Maybe too tactical type of knife, but very solid. I have new one with G-10 scales and Tri-Ad lock.

What "purpose" are you wanting your new folder to perform? I'm not exactly sure what the Cold Steel AK-47 was designed to do, but if you can tell us what you want or expect it to do....maybe we can come up with some suggestions of folders that do the same thing!

I would like a knife that can do heavy jobs that a fixed blade could do in a folder

I don't think any folder is as capable as a full tang fixed blade, but the CS Recon 1 has a 4" blade compared to the AK47's 3.5", so it might be more useful for heavy jobs. If you don't want to worry about ruining it, the Ontario Rat folder is a good option cuz its cheaper. If you want a really solid higher priced option, look at the Zero Tolerance knives like the 0350 (~$110).

I don't own the knife, and I wanted one for a long time, but then I realized that it isnt the best buy/value. It's aus8 steel in a 40-60 dollar knife(depends where u buy it.) Buy an Endura or a buck vantage if your looking for low cost quality!!!

Thanks for the input and i held the zt 350 and it gave me confidence but thats i little high for the price. Also i have the rat 1 and it is amazing but i want a knife that is cheap and looks cool that also functions

The AK-47 is a fairly large knife in the pocket, and the pommel shape somewhat obstructs your hand as you reach in your pocket. The shape of the scales really locks your hand in place, providing excellent grip. The thumb plate works fine. As with all CS folders, the G10 is so aggressive that it may shred your pocket, so spend 3 minutes and remove the clip and sand that area a little bit smooth. Nice blade shape with decent steel. The teflon finish will wear off fast, but thats ok with me as I think it looks good. But for the price you get a great EDC blade with a killer lockup, that will serve as a last ditch defensive ("tactical") weapon. As others have said, consider also the Recon 1 and Lawman. But if you want the AK-47, go for it.

i got it its great. the recon 1 and american lawman are pretty much the same just depends what shape you like

It's probably not the answer you wanted....but you should get a fixed blade. Folders are inherently weaker than fixed blades.

It's kinda like saying you want a ball peen hammer that can break up concrete like a sledge hammer.

the best quote i have ever heard about folders is that they are prebroken fixed blades. there is no folder that can stand up to the same abuse that a well built fixed blade can, but i have no doubt that the triad lock is perfectly sufficient unless you are trying to cut falling logs with the back of you knife. If i want strong, i go to a ZT 0200 or 0300 series. if that is out of your price range, then there are totally other options, but that is my opinion.

NOTE: i just realized that that comment was one of the most snobbish things i have ever said. you guys are affecting me. :D

Ok then what would be a good folder knife that has a blade around 3.5 in?

It would be easier if you gave some requirements of what your looking for...

Price range foremost, weight, blade type, steel type, etc. Is weight gonna be a factor...?? Are you gonna be EDC'ing the knife. For me I won't EDC a clipped knife that weighs over 4 oz's. Knowing things like this will help throwing out ideas. We do know that you want a "hard-use" folder...so that is a start.

There's loads of "good" folding knives with 3.5" blades.

Anything with a Tri-ad lock is going to be pretty sturdy. Next knife on my list is a CS Spartan.

Speaking of the spartan.....I wish they would make a smaller EDC type version. Really like the handle design but it's just too big for me as a EDC. If I needed a 4.5" blade then I would use one of my fixed blades.

Sorry if this is a little off topic OP...not trying to hijack the thread...;)

At around the 3.5 inch blade I would go with the American Lawman or ZT 200 or 350. The ZTs are all tough and for the money the American Lawman is tough. Just look at Ankerson"s hard use test on Youtube. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Just today, I received a (new-style) CS Recon 1 (pe tanto) from a trade, and I have to say that I am VERY impressed with it! It is very well-made, smooth, and strong. This Recon 1 fits my (large) hand like it was made for me!
