Cold Steel China. Fact or Fiction?

Heheh. I recently learned that my Urban Pal is a conterfeit.

With all the expensive knives that could be copied, why bother with the UP?

Simple answer. You bought one! So did many other people. A lot of little profit makes a big profit.

cold steel knives are made all over the world (read their catalog or check out their website) if your asking if a knock off cold steel knife is as good or better then a real one punch yourself in the neck hard. when are knock offs ever as good as the original? there is a chance that you miss read where your knife was made maybe it was made in china i don't know off the top of my head where each knife is made but i know that cold steel knives are some of the best cheaper end (for the most part) knives out there you get a lot of knife for not a lot of money (usually).

also are you aware of the location of Taiwan? its very close to china and easily mistaken for china when it comes to making stuff...

It's not out of the realm of possibility. I have seen at least one knockoff of a commercially available knife that was better than the original in every way. Better steel, better edge bevels, better assembly, and upon close inspection better refinement. Not only that, it was 1/3 the price. It wasn't a counterfeit, but it was a copy.

It also seems possible that some copies and counterfeits may be the same knives that, somewhere along the line, "fall off a truck", are a "night shift run" or exit the back door of the factory. I once saw a CS copy that I swear must have been made from the same tooling as the original. It just looked too damn good and clean. I couldn't vouch for the quality of the materials, but it seems possible that it was somehow diverted from the normal assembly line at one point or another.

Received each of these models today! After punching myself in the neck, hard! I disassembled them, reassembled with loc-tight, a little vise work and the tolerances we're better. If your expecting a $300.00 knife for $45.00 you'll be disappointed. However, if your expecting a $45.00 knife you'll be pleasantly surprised with a $90.00 knife (My opinion!)

This post is an odd mix of praise , combined with the classic smear which relegates Cold Steel to the status of a mere advertising or marketing company.
If you take even a cursory glance at a CS catalogue you'll see that they make an incredible variety of items that this cowboy ,at least, finds very cool. Much more than virtually any other company in fact.
What actual factory these items are made in strikes me as irrrelevant.[ Just like I don't know or care what factory Spyderco's are made in ] CS products are sold under the Cold Steel name and under no other. Without Cold Steel, these products would not exist. Therefore Cold Steel is a knife [and sword and hawk and spear etc ] making company and obviously not an advertising company.

This post should be reposted in every Cold Steel bashing thread. CS is a knife manufacturer. They design a lot of unique pieces. They advertise them effectively. Anyone who doesn't appreciate their work doesn't have to buy it.

In general knives made in china will be of poorer quality. This is not always due to the lack of manufacturing capability. It's more to do with what the company having the knives manufactured have specified. Chinese companies are capable of making really nice knives. But lets face it, a company isn't looking for the best quality if they have them made in china. They are wanting a knife that will sale that costs them the least. Hence, more money in their pocket.

I have one cold steel, its a older knife, I think the model is the Recon, its one of the toughest knives I own.Black blade rubber handle

I think you're talking about the Carbon V Recon Scout. Did it come with a nice plastic sheath? Super-thick spine?

And you're right about the toughness, they're freaking insane.

+1. I'd trade places with Lynn Thompson any day. Wealthy, with my own knife company? Booya! He's a man that enjoys his life.

I own several CS and do like them, but to play Devils advocate again if a knock off isnt as good as the original. Does that mean the GI TANTO isnt as good as the Strider he took it from? seems he claims it is.

Nonsense. If the quality control is good, the knife will be good. I would challenge anyone to tell the difference in quality between the Spyderco's made in Taiwan, Japan, the US and China. I spent a lot of time comparing the F&F of such knives as the Gayle Bradley, the Manix, the Police and the Resilience, and let's just say the Resilience does not finish last...
Cold Steel has they QC in order. Bad specimens get thru sometimes, like they do everywhere. Most of the time, it's good stuff.

I don't know which is better but they would probably be nose in nose in a toughness test.

Well I know for a fact the Canadian is no where even close to the Grohman. It was a poor knock off of it and really now jsut sits in the tacklebox. As for the GI tanto, neither companies appealed to me.

Given the price difference between them, the cold steel SHOULDN'T be any where close to the Grohmann. The Grohmanns show great craftsmanship. The Cold Steel is for economy. Use it to try that style of blade. Then buy a nice one if you like it.

Doesn't Grohmann use 1.4116 as their stainless steel? That's the same thing as the 416 Krupp that Cold Steel is using.

Bwa haa haa haa haa! ANYONE can make a high quality knife in any country. The question is all about quality control. No facts prove your misled opinion. What a lame generality.

For some reason I think people have a hard time reading and deciphering past the first line. I said in general. It's at the discretion of the knife company to specify the quality they want made. And yes, their is a part of me that likes to think that made in the USA is better. Maybe to much pride?

I guess you should start buying all your knives from Pakistan. You did say any country. From what I hear you can get some killer deals on knives from there. Facts are facts. You buy your knives from other countries and I will stick to the good old USA if possible. I believe in taking care of our own first. And I still would like to believe that the USA has better quality control than China in GENERAL. That is the key word. Go USA!!!!!!
