I was wondering if anyone has had an unpleasant experience with cold steel's
customer service and owns one of their kraton handle knives.

I recently returned my Cold Steel kobun of 4years with a kraton handle to them under warranty; that the knife's blade was no properly bonded to the Kraton handle ,which resulted in rust entering the handle..

I first noticed rust, after hand washing my knife which I always do.But on the last occasion,I noticed rust coming from the area around the blade and kraton guard .So I took a kleenex and cleaned up the rust.

So I immediately emailed them and explained the problem.I was advised to shipped it back to them for an inspection.

Upon inspection,I was told that there was no rust and that the handle was properly bonded to the blade. And that they would need $25.00 by cheque or money order because they had to cut the handle off and replace it with a new handle.

My knife now, after receiving it back from repair has what appears to be a Kraton handle, molded around a grivory insert at the blade guard.

are you sure it's your knife cause they are saleing the newer version now thats about 25bux.

Considering CS makes no knives in house, IIRC, who did all the work molding a new Kraton handle on? Perhaps they just glued on a new one.

Yes, I'm sure that it's my knife because the right side of the blade says "MADE IN JAPAN" which is AUS 8A.

Not like the others made until 2 - 3 years ago which are marked "MADE IN TAIWAN ',which are 420 Sub Zero Quenched.

What a walk back in time;from using AUS 8A Steel to 420 Sub zero Quenched Steel.

Now,last year in their catalog(2006),I saw they were making the exact Cold Steel Kobun ;in ever detail and specs(AUS 8A).And futher more, the retail price was EVEN LOWER THAN BEFORE.

This year,Spring 2007 in their catalog,I see that the kobun's steel again has changed to 4116 Krupps - a German Steel.

The fall of house Camillus is a contributing factor to the steel switch.

I snapped a half moon shape out of my Voyager XL doing snap cuts on small branches. A liitle too much torque on the thin blade. Sent it back to Cold Steel with the explanation, got a new one back a week later.

For those who wet their knives sometimes and may be concerned about rust forming under the handles, I would like to recommend an excellent product called CorrosionX. Yes, that is the correct and exact spelling! I'm looking at my can of it right now. It comes in little bottles, big bottles, and aerosol cans. You can find it online at http://www.corrosionx.com and I suggest you all get some. It is low viscosity with high penetration, but it's very effective at preventing rust and other forms of corrosion. I've been using it for about ten years with very good results. I even spray everything under the hood of my vehicles with it -- including all wiring, fuses, relays, etc. -- once a year. This is some good stuff!

Thanks for your input,I just wanted to add that before this unpleasant experience that I've owned several other Cold Steel knives.A very satisfied customer and also a customer of there Special Projects division...........Right now just don't know what to think

Any way,When I sent my knife back,I did mention in my brief note that I would like a replacement.I guess since they weren't making them anymore at the time that wasn't an option.

Also,I was wondering what style of blade was your Voyager XL since I also have one with a 5" Tanto blade;when blade of your snapped.
I also had a problem with mine, about day 2 or 3 latter after receiving it from one of their online dealers.

I noticed that a portion of the lock cutout of the blade, in which the lock rests when full deployed was concave in shape and that the grind around the second point (tanto)was not even.Which contradicts the claim by Cold Steel that their Voyagers are made with precision milled parts and hand finished and equal custom made knives.(Have pictures, just ask me to post)

So I shipped them back with a brief note and about two weeks latter, I received my replacement. But unlike you,the story don't end, there's a new one and this time there's a chunk of metal missing from around the tang and the kicker area.So back to Cold Steel again.when I got it back this time,I was happy to say everything was done right but it took so much.

Also, just wanted to mention that I've heard of your company in Tactical Knives. And the review, done by Jerry Vancook about your Double Shoulder Sheath with two fixed blade knives... Impressed........And recently, the chest sheath, also reviewed by Jerry which he calls a BRA Because of how it worn.

So for all those who have't heard of Survival Sheath Systems check them out

Thank you, Razor. I had the clip point, one of my favorite carry knives, although not entirely legal, so it stays at home now. (the big folder is illegal, but a pair of HK 9mm's is not, go figure) Jerry is indeed a Gentleman and a fine writer.

Wow Rob, Didn't know that big folder(Cold Steel Voyager XL) was illegal in WA. Carry that everday with my ASP Baton which I know is illegal in seattle.
Good to know, Because I was in Seattle at a convention, last summer.
Anyways, stayed they the whole time;just to busy

And as far as I know,in my area(BC) there's no restriction on folder size but absolutely no firearms in public.Except law enforcement and Armour guards with proper training and permits. With rare exception(as far as I know),people in great danger whom have reported their incident to police, can carry
