Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist - Great!

Yeah, I misplaced a hatchet in an atv trail, and I found it somehow a year later; just in case I lay the sheath on the ground I don't want it to disappear...

I finally did a little chopping and throwing with mine the other day. Works quite well, but I definitely need to get some grip tape on the handle. I've had a couple strips of GT-5000 set aside for months for just that purpose, but I never got around to it. :( I think I'll also hit the whole thing with some stripper first and take it down to bare steel.

That goldish color coating comes off pretty easy just rubbing on it some what, but the black coating underneath is a little harder to get off. I wonder why the two coatings?

I received the Survivalist a few days back. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it feels in hand. I was afraid that it would be a bit clunky or too handle heavy. It has the best factory edge that I've seen in a long time. The point is thinner than I expected, I'd have liked a bit more thickness there but that's just personal preference.
I tried a couple different handle wraps but finally settled on an inner tube for now. Paracord felt too bulky and couldn't go to the guard with the factory sheath. It works fine with a large Spec-Ops replacement.
More experiments to come.

I also purchased the DF Bowie and boot knife. Really impressed with both.

^how do you like that drop forged bowie? Was tempted to get that one too, its under 50.00 ; cant beat that.I was thinking of scotchbrighting the silver finish off,and get to the black finish, and see how that holds up...

the updated Cold Steel Survivalist Knife took care of all the minor faults ppl have an issue with. the knife following the same lines as the Cold Steel Recon Scout Knife. it is now, with it's updates, the #1 production knife ever made. Get One...

Just picked one of these up and agree with your posts above, I like this knife. I have a feeling that the sheath is going to drive me crazy and feel like replacing it.

1. Anybody know of a kydex maker who makes a sheath for the Survivalist?
2. Anybody know of a leather maker who makes for the Survivalist?

I have an email into Savage sheaths to see if he has a knife for a template, awaiting reply. I noticed that Patriot leather lists the Survivalist and although I love their sheaths, not sure if I want to spend that much more than the cost of the knife on leather.

Thanks for your input.

Great knives. I think the Cold Steel SURVIVALIST replaced th3 Recon Scout Knife? I don't know much about after market sheaths, sorry. I do know that the knife is Indestructible, wicked sharp and stays that way. I like the sheath that comes with it. I put a tec-loc belt clip on it tho. Lots of luck with that Knife...

Recon Scout is still around...newest version will be A2 steel, but apparently hasn't been released yet.

Oh? I stand corrected. The Recon Scout will more than likely be outside of my price ranges? I really like the steel the Survivalist is made from. 52100 bearings steel. Once properly heat treated. The higher the numbers the better. the survivalist Knife is modeled after the Recon Scout. Same lines. Same profile. Great price. A perfect knife..

So, here's the answer to my own question. I emailed Savage Sheaths and asked about the Survivalist even though it was not on his knife list. He said he could make one. Had it in less than a week and it fits great.

This is my 4th or 5th sheath in the last couple of years and I have enjoyed all of them. Stone was not included but fits a 3X1X1/4 size stone.

I like it.IMG_0021.jpg IMG_0022.jpg IMG_0023.jpg

Just received mine today when the UPS driver tossed it on to my front porch. I love this thing and it has already survived the abuse of UPS delivery. LOL!

I plan on buying a second one to save and using the heck out of the first one.
