Hi. I am new on this forum. I am really enjoying it.

I am sure this has been discussed in the past, but I am unable to find any threads about this. I am wondering what peoples opinions are on the Cold Steel Proof DVDs.

I got More Proof about a year ago and watched part of it, but didnt care too much at the time cause I dont like most CS knives. Lately I have been wanting a not too expensive folder, but something of fairly good quality, and decided to watch the More Proof DVD again. I though the knives look really tough. They claim their knives are so much better than their competetors. But really how do I know a Benchmade (my fav brand) or Spyderco isnt stronger or tougher? Of course the DVD is made to make their knives look good and to sell knives, but how seriously do you take their claims?

I have a CS recon tanto, I dont use it for anything, so I can't say much about it. And I ordered a Safe Maker the other day, but havent received it yet. I use folders a lot but dont have any CS folders cause they are just too ugly for me, so i dont know about the quality first hand.

Thank you, this seems to be what I was looking for, but I havent read the whole thread yet.
I dont have much of an opinion about CS, good or bad, cause I have not used their knives much, but they have a few interesting ones.

I have viewed More Proof and Solid Proof several times for their entertainment value. I particularly enjoy when Lynn Thompson palavers about this or that. Jabbing at hanging meat and chopping sausage filled gloves is hilarious.

Any quality knife will do just fine. Thompson is no dummy when it comes to marketing, the purpose of these DVD's is to get you to think that nothing else compares to CS. Cold Steel, Benchmade, Spyderco, etc; they all cut and chop. Find one that works for you and be happy.:)

I agree 100% with this claim.

The CS DVD's are pure entertainment. I keep watching to see if anyone lost a finger or leg

That being said, I own a few CS products: A Bushman, Voyager X2 and a Spike (tanto style). Enjoy all of them.

I also own quite a few Spyderco's, Benchmades and assorted stuff.

Does CS make some crap, yes . . . do they also make some good blades? Definately :D

Lynn can sometimes be viewed similarly to a used car salesman. He doesn't care about the buyer. He only cares about the sale.

The CS videos are extreme versions of what all knife makers should do, I think. If you're going to carry a knife for mostly cutting boxes, bait, game and other things that aren't going to beat you to death, I very much like Benchmade knives. They are light weight and have high steel grades. But if you're going to be doing heavy cutting and emergency type work, I'd want a blade that's not going to fail and a lock-back system that's not going to collapse. The Benchmades are something I've never tested under rigorous conditions, nor will I.

Some of the folks on this board will buy a knife, then proceed to beat it to death to determine how strong it is. In all the threads I've read, the bottom line seems to be that Cold Steel tends to be somewhat over the top with its marketing approaches, but you do get a strong knife for your money. Cold Steel also is accused by some of stealing designs, though honestly I've never seen a clear-cut case of this. (I'm hoping that someone will post a few examples here one of these days; all I've seen are the accusations themselves.)

Other companies, like CRKT, make excellent knives, but when they claim their folders can be made as strong as a fixed knife because of their patented LAWKS feature, many knowledgable people say t'aint so.

In short, I'd like to see every knife company do tests on their knives and then stand behind their products. Knife and gun magazines both tend to be in the back pockets of the advertisers.

How do you get these videos? I've heard about them for years yet I've never gotten one.

Opinions on this always differ, in each case it comes up there are people who think they are direct ripoffs, other people see similar features, and some people just see similarities as exist on any knife. The only real performance issue is mainly with the use of 420 stainless and the big hype about deep cryo on that steel, which is one of the few stainless that benefit least from that treatement because it is a really low alloy stainless.

I find the DVD really entertaining. Who doesnt like watching some guy slice up meat and then present the knive to the camera and narrow his eyes?

My problem with CS is the only folders they make that I like cost $300-400. The cheaper ones are so ugly.

Wow! Two ongoing threads bashing Cold Steal at the same time. That's impressive.

Yes, sorry, I didn't see the other thread when I started this one. And I did not start it with the intention of bashing CS. But it is interesting that so many people have something to say about CS.

It is difficult to know what threads has already been started. This is an ongoing thing with Cold Steal anyways.
I can see that you were curious regarding the opinions of others regarding Cold Steal, and this is the outcome. It is the honest opinion of members and it just so happens most peoples' opinions are negative towards this brand. Some maybe bashing though.

Jryan, To be "fair" to Cold Steel, I do own and use a few of there products and found them to be very good for what they are,

1. The CS Shovel, A good piece of camping gear.
2. There push knives, they were very good for a production blade,
3. The Desperado, I had to have it rehandled as the kraton "egg" was out of line with the rest of the blade. Making it difficult to use.

I do like there Vaquero folders, I just would not use them too heavily as the serration will break off. Some people have used them for light pruning etc, that is about as hard as I would use them as well.

ive got a couple of cs hawks and for the money theyve held up pretty good id say , that is after i reprofiled the edges alot . same goes for the kukri shaped machete ive got . first swing at some bamboo stalks the edge folded up . after a loooong time with a coarse wet stone i "unrolled" the edge and only then could i start to reprofile the edge . afterwards i took it back out into the bamboo grove and it cut effortlessly and held its edge a whole lot better so much in fact that i actually would trust it in the feild without question. the whole blade was painted so i couldnt tell if the edge had been burned during manufacturing but obviously it had been because ever since i took off all that metal i havent had any more problems . i guess there was descent steel under all that crap after all . i feel sorry for the poor sap that would buy one and go straight to the backwoods/jungle having not known that the edge was burned and wouldnt hold an edge . bad on cold steel for that .
