cold steel dvd

The only real performance issue is mainly with the use of 420 stainless and the big hype about deep cryo on that steel, which is one of the few stainless that benefit least from that treatement because it is a really low alloy stainless.
Yes, I've often wondered how good (or bad) the Peacekeepers are. I suppose as an all-weather defense only knife, it's probably okay. I'd like to see someone review them. I've heard 420 can be made to be acceptable, but that you can't get blood from a turnip.

I've also noticed CS can give catalog readers 2-3 paragraphs of garbage before even getting into their product. The Desperado is an example of pure hype. Who cares about outlaws who were feared, etc. The online version is brief: "The Desperado of the Old West -- a legendary fixture of American folklore. As the name suggests, this was a desperate man, an outlaw, with nothing left in life to lose, and an astonishing reputation to be gained. With this unbeatable attitude, and some formidable skills with a gun and a knife, he became one fierce opponent, worthy of respect and often, widely feared."

Oh, yes, and they love that word "astonishing" or "astonishingly." It pops up all the time in their copy. "Atonishingly sharp" or sharp for an "astonishingly long time." I have to admit I like their knives, but hype is hype.

BTW, here's a 5-inch 420 blade that has the exact shape and so forth as their AUS 8 Vaquero. It also would be interesting to see how these two blades fare in the same tests. Two identical blades in two astonishingly different steels. I'll bet a comparison would be...well...astonishing.

I have nothing bad to say about my CS 3" Voyager, carrying it since 1999.
It does everthing I need a pocketknife to do, can be resharpened easily (AUS8A), has a very sturdy lock, and is light -1.8 oz - in the pocket. I also have a Bushman & Mini-Tanto. My experience with CS is positive.

I think in general they are selling to a different market than the Bladeforums membership, the whole "cryo" 420 line for example, how many people actually buying knives know that 420 and ATS-34 are not similar and that cryogenics just extends the quench.

As to how bad is 420, it depends on what respect. I have run slicing trials on cardboard with CRK&T's 420J2 vs their AUS4/8 and you can notice a difference, but it isn't many to one. They do worse push cutting hard objects.

One of my favorite folders is an el hombre by cold steel which is just a plain edge version of the Vaquero. It cuts better than any other blade shape i have used in a pocket style knife and it cuts anything! it is ugly but it performs and thats what you want in a knife performance! I have several cold steel knives and use the heck out of them all. I have never liked spyderco's and have sold about every one i have ever purchased. Just my opinions though just like everyone else here.

I have lots of CS knives, the designs are interesting and some are really good knives. Cliff Stamp has even said nice things about the voyeger!!!! I even have the 420 stainless ODA which must have slipped through the net because it's excellent. The dvd is amusing, if you believe the hype then you get what you deserve. Still I've not had any bad knives from them so far and am still buying their product.

Yes, I've found AUS 8 to be a reasonably good steel, but I love the Benchmade Ascent (ATS-34). Lightweight and feels great in the hand. For cutting boxes, I love CS's serrated blades and the Vaquero 5-inch had to grow on me, but I really like it now. I'd really hoped it would be released with VG-10. I'm still not sure how good VG-1 is compared to AUS 8.

I also like Spyderco knives a great deal, but wish they'd put out a larger blade knife.
