Hello Folks..

This was bound to happen sooner or later.
Check it out yourself : http://www.coldsteel.com/
Let the page on the right load and click new products for 2001.

Cold steel Axis modification is actually quit inventive. But the knife's design is not good I think.

This Is that POS-steel, isn't it?
They are making all the cool knives out of it now... no wonder the desperado is at sale for $60 in the x-mas cat....

Seb

Yeah but it's cryo-quenched. Wonder if they use Whirlpool or Maytag? Seriously, on that "spike" they have, they say it is ground to a "zero-degree edge". I can't imagine how easily that will chip out or roll if it really is plain old 420. Now, if it's 420V, that's something different...

Wow, that modified axis lock is actually pretty neat looking. But $140 retail for 8A steel and Zytel...? Methinks that it would be pretty difficult to clean out that mechanism without having to disassemble.

Are there any C/S reps. here? I would like to know why Cold Steel has lost their edge in research and development, like using other companies designs. Also, when are they going to start using modern today technologies materials, like G10, resiprene C, or aus10. Don't get me wrong I think they have been a great company in the past, and even today continue to create a diverse line of products. But I wish their prices would be reflective of the products they make. Let the flames begin if you feel I have been unreasonable in my post. :-)

Happy Holidays

There is a CS forum, but no reps from the company participate anymore I believe.

With respect to newer materials, IMO, CS has decided on a certain price/product/market convergence point, and they'd have difficulty charging more for their products, and their profits would decline.

I got a good giggle when I found out the "San Mai" (sp?) steel was 420J and AUS-8. (I think that was it)

Heh, I just went to look in the CS forum to refresh my memory but I couldn't find it.

Did it get removed?

DaveH, I think they shut the forum down because they were getting too many responses to keep up with.

The Ti-lite looks like they borrowed more than little from a custom maker, Phil B (something) I can never remember how to spell it.

I don't think the Recons are going to make it. How many times can you put a different handle on the same blade and call it new?

I would be impressed if CS would bring out the 5" voyager I saw Lynn with at the 99 Blade Show. Couldn't tell the lock type, but it had liners and what appeared to be G-10 scales. He was showing it to Fred Perrin and Laci Szabo when I saw it. As I tried to get a better look, he put it away.

On the Ti-Lite page, Cold Steel says, "Many thanks to custom knife maker Phil Boguszewski for his design influence in the creation of the Ti-Lite." So... whatever that means. It does look kind of cool though.

The "Ultra-Lock" (snicker) also looks interesting. Too bad it's on one of those ninja knives.

I have to admit, i've had my eye on the old subhilt cold steel made for a while, but wasn't willing to spend that much...... now that the new one is out.......

tempting? maybe...

I think this is typical coldsteel....
A lot of useless talk to sell to people who don't know what their holding in their hands.
Cryo-quench.....zero-edge... If you think twice about this, it's simply impossible.
And I don't understand why they start using such a ****ty steel as 420....
Nah...Cold steel isn't my favourite anyway.

This is interesting... Just a couple of years ago Lynn was telling us how lousy 420 stainless was. He must've improved it quite a bit, all by himself I'm sure. Know what kind of steel is used in the Master Tanto? The middle is AUS8 and the outer layers are 420J2. Remember now, Cold Steel doesn't make anything.I like a lot of Cold Steel knives, but I don't care too much for the hype.

I liked some of the designs very much, but the Desperado with 420 is still marked with 120 $ retail price!?! At least on the homepage. And I was sooooo close to buying one...
But IMHO, using 420 disqualifies CS as a serious knife manufacturer. And the fact that they were badmouthing this very steel just makes it funnier. I don't think you can expect surprising results from subzeroquenching...

Jim Healy
have to agree the new sub-hilt is nice and at $100 MSRP can most likely be found fairly cheap on line
Bob

420 stays a lousy blade steel, only suitable for things that never leave the closet and can't rust.
Subzeroquench is 1. literaly impossible
2. most lightly means it has had a cryo-treath. That means the grainsize is smaller, and it's tougher. It doesn't do much for edgeholding tough.
The best 420 made is 420J2, and that can be hardened to about 55. Or, Coldsteel modified it, like buck did. But then the info on the website is wrong, because Coldsteel would have tought of some fancy name for "their" new steel.
So, for me, this excludes coldsteel from my list of serious knifemanufacterers.

The 420 lets them die cut the blades for economy. That part I understand. I just don't understand the price. Do you suppose they at least went to 420HC rather than 420J2?

I don't know how much 420J costs versus all the other 420x series, my guess is in quantity, the price differences are not much.

If for example you take a $250 San Mai tanto, how does it compare to a CR One Piece in A2 or a Busse in Infi? (Blade grind not withstanding)

You have to admit though, $100 for a piece of 420, is a stroke of genius as far as marketing goes.
