Cold Steel Help!

The Recon Scout, SRK, and Recon Tanto are all good knives and should work fine. IMO the question is what size and weight you want. If you want to chop then the Recon Scout or even the Trailmaster would be the better choice, and if you want a mid-sized utility knife capable of light chopping then the Recon Tanto, and if you want something smaller then the SRK.

I've used my Recon Tanto for diverse tasks including use as a kitchen knife, use as a light machete in the back yard, and general all-around cutting.

The Recon is a large knife, if that's what you want. Generally I prefer something smaller and lighter for backpacking such as the CS Master Hunter, Marble's Campcraft or Fieldcraft, a puukko, or Dozier K1. That being said, the SRK is an excellent all-round knife, particularly if you can find one in Carbon V, which is now discontinued.

It`s obvious you really WANT that Tanto (and it`s a damned good knife), so BUY it.... after using it for awhile and you find out it`s not exactly what you needed, *then* buy the SRK....that`s why we call it "collecting", Dude !

EXACTLY!!!!!
Get the Tanto, and get a Gerber Light AX, or other LIGHT camp ax for cheap and you can live in the woods forever if you want. BUT I'd Get something other then a Cold steel. They used to be made of Great carbon Steel in the USA. Now Taiwan. Still a GREAT Knife, and you seem to be a Biggining collecter,(No Offense) We all where at one time. But there are a lot of Great Tanto's In that Range. Get the K-bar Tanto. It has a Gaurd, a Pommel to hammer with and the same type of sheath as the Cold steel, Only Made In the USA and a Neater looking Design, IMHO. Or Forget Tanto, and Go Ranger Or Becker for Camp a Knife. Same price range!!!! But it seems you want a tanto( I love Tantos) Go for it.

There are lots and lots of knives that look and can be used like the more expensive Scout. I got my Recon Tanto many moons ago and it's still one my favorites. Just hold one for 1 second and you will know it’s the right knife. If zombies attack TONIGHT you will be glad you have the Recon Tanto.

Both are fine knives for most but if you want a good camp knife you can do better for about the same money and also score a better warranty.

I'd suggest instead of either of these to try to score you a "Son of DogFather"
Its a much better blade, much better steel, and a better company and warranty. All around it will just be the better choice. It baically has the same dimensions as the Recon Scout.

The Yard Hook Or Yard Guard are both similar also and for that matter you can get bigger with an actual Dog Father providing they still sell any of those latter ones mentioned.

If these are not available watch the for sale forums here. Or keep an eye out for their next model.

You can also look at the new Ethan Becker/Kabar. I think the one to look at is the BK-9
