Cold Steel Hold Out 1.

Yeah, a 5-incher would be ideal. But I love my 6-incher, too. It's the kind of knife that would have a following in any blade length. The only thing I don't like is that tough spring. I imagine one would have to remove some metal to adjust it.

Thanks for the review Josh. Interesting, but I'm still on the fence with this one.

I have the Hold Out II and really like it, it is light, easy to carry and the blade is nice. I have some reservations about the handle material. Since it has no steel or aluminium liners what kind of durability can I expect? I would like to buy the larger model for a training knife (solo drills and cutting, I have some escrima and historical fencing experience, the latter has lots of dagger technigues).

One thing though about the HO. I find it a bit difficult to open, the thumb stud is too close to the frame and lock is slighty stiff. So I am going to make a thumb plate, a simple L-shaped piece of steel that I will bolt in the hole that this stud now occupies. Is the stud easy to take off? I could shape the blade so that it works also in "wave" opening.

It's easy to take off. A slightly longer thumb stud would be nice. Not sure how to find one. Leaving the blade half-open for several hours or overnight will take some of the tension out of that lock.

Made an experiment with the HO II I have. I took the original thumbstud off and found out that a 3 mm bolt fits the hole. Bolt & nut - combination in this size makes a bit too small, allthough longer stud. I proceeded to drill the hole to 4 mm. After 2 drillbits and some work with the dremel I had a 4 mm hole (damn this steel is hard). Now I have a longer thumbstud with more support. Works just fine.

Does the Hold Out I fully fit into a denim jeans' front pocket? My Espada Large does not fully fit in most of my jeans, when I am clipping it (the clip barely catches the denim).

I have adjusted the spring tension on three of mine to lessen the pressure required to unlock the bar, but I still get a solid lockup when flipping them open. You could remove one side scale and check the fitment of the Triad components to see why it is difficult to release.

I just bought a Hold Out 1 and adjusted everything to my liking, even the tension on the Triad lock bar.

Hey guys,

Any pointers when I lighten the spring force on my Hold Out I ?
I can unlock it OK but find if I do it several times in quick succession eventually I have to switch from thumb to middle finger in a gripping motion or visy/versy. I would prefer it to be a tweak lighter so I don't have to focus on it.

The one time I flicked it open it got stuck for a bit and I had to fool with it to get it unstuck. I don't really care about that but will spend some time smoothing out surfaces and maybe squaring them up if needed.

Thanks

PS:
and adjusted everything to my liking,

What else should I look at adjusting ?

Eureka !

My monstrous Cold Steel Hold Out I is now a well behaved squire.

The knife is now unbelievably friendly to close. It is nearly as easy and painless to close as my Case Trapper but with a blade lock I could hang over a cliff from.

I must say I was hesitant to lessen the spring tension on mine because I could see how that would more than likely make the tension holding the blade closed less.

The other night I took the knife apart for the sole purpose of lessening the spring tension. I only changed the spring tension a minute amount. That was enough to convince me I was on the wrong track.

Leave the spring tension the heck alone. That’s not the solution to the hard to unlock problem.

Tonight I couldn’t wait to have another go but had social obligations. Once I was free of that I pounced. Total time to take the knife apart, make the mod and put it back together was about the time it took THE CHEF to brush her teeth. I had to do it before she went to sleep so I didn’t make noise and keep her up.

DONE.
I’m so pleased and my mod did not compromise the strength of the latch when the knife is open.

Large, self satisfied, sigh.

PS: I might open up my Mini Tuff Lite and see if the same can go there as well. He is kind of a bear to unlock. Great, great little knife though.

I modded my Hold Out I, but then sold it about a year ago.

The Hold Out I is too long for me to carry as a pocket folder but I have a Hold Out 2 and 3; the 2 being my favorite size/length.
