Cold Steel In The Magazines

For those who are interested, the new May/June issue of Knives Illustrated contains a feature article on the AD-10, comparing it with the Benchmade Freek in a performance test. It's a pretty good piece.

The author does bungle Lynn's name, referring to him as "Lynn Thomas." But I guess that's fair, since Les de Asis doesn't even get mentioned by name! Hey, who cares about accuracy and thoroughness in the Age of the Internet?

Anyway, it's nice to see some positive print on Cold Steel. KI has been doing a much better job of that lately.

Full disclosure, I sent him the knife for the article. It was my choice to determine which knife went up against the 560-1, so I chose the AD-10 rather than an SR1/4MAX/etc. Sticking with my usual response to "send us your strongest folder" (i.e Dutch Bushcraft Knives videos), we always send something strong but not our strongest, to keep it somewhat fair.

Just a heads up for those interested: The new July/August 2020 issue of Knives Illustrated contains a feature article on Cold Steel's XL folders. It's a positive piece and worth the read, particularly since the magazines usually ignore large folding knives, especially Cold Steel's.

I will have to try and find an issue, so hard to find Gun/Knife magazines anymore.

OK, I have to say that I never thought I'd be writing this post. Last night I was flipping through the newest issue (April 2022) of Blade. When I got to the monthly column by Editor Steve Shackleford, I discovered that he had devoted a third of his column to praising Lynn Thompson and acknowledging a few of the influences Cold Steel has had on the knife industry. Now, granted, most of what he had to say about Lynn revolved around Lynn's marketing skills. But still, I couldn't believe that I was reading positive press about Lynn Thompson and Cold Steel in Blade magazine!

After forty years of running Cold Steel successfully, contributing dozens of innovations to the knife industry, designing scores of unique and amazing knives, and setting the standard for production knife performance testing, I guess all it took for Lynn to be recognized by Blade was to sell his company to a drab, faceless conglomerate that the magazine's staff doesn't hate.

P.S. - The remainder of the column was devoted to Spencer Frazer of SOG and David Bloch of Outdoor Edge. Shackleford touted all of the many BLADE Magazine annual awards bestowed upon SOG and Outdoor Edge over the decades. Curiously, he didn't mention anything about awards the magazine had given to Cold Steel....
