Can any of you knifenuts give me some background info on the steels being used.
Good Bad would you buy one of these blades or are they using a junk steel.
Neat to see that they're finally making some swords, but considering that you can pick up a differentially tempered Paul Chen (also made in China) for MUCH less, I'm not ready to "add to shopping cart" yet.

Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't even know they were offering swords. I just went to the http://www.coldsteel.com website and looked over the specs.
First of all, I have a lot of CS knives. I like them, they've worked for me, I rely on their quality and appreciate the reasonable prices. These swords are not cheap. I don't think CS would offer them, especially charging real money like that, if they weren't good, tough, working blades. But I don't do that kind of work, so I think I'll pass on the swords.
It will be interesting to see what the internet shops price the swords at. However, like most of you, I see no feasible reason to buy one. And I certainly don't see myself getting attacked by that "7 inch thick bamboo" any time soon.

My knives do not make me a primitive caveman. However, carrying rocks like the ones you have inside your skull...now that would make me primitive.
I was never much into cold steel, but they have some pretty cool new stuff coming out. I may have to give them a second look. Maybe internet dealers will have good prices.

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.
I really enjoy all of my Cold Steel knives. Unfortunately, the suggested retail price on the new Japanese swords is too high. For the price it seems that a Rob Criswell katana is more cost effective. Of course the Cold Steel katanas appear to be a little more tradtional in style.
Go to www.ltspecpro.com and you will find Cold Steel's items usually for much lower than the suggested retail prices listed at Cold Steel's website (www.coldsteel.com). The www.ltspecpro.com is "Lynn Thompson's Special Projects" and is the mail order division of Cold Steel. Of course, mail order/online dealers usually offer even cheaper prices on CS knives, but I don't recall seeing any that stock their swords (off the top of my head). Hope this helps. JRF.

I don't know what factory in China manufactures them, but I'm assuming they're intended to compete in the same range as Paul Chen's offerings. Maybe they will do a good job. I'd like to see one up close and give it a critique though.... I just hope they don't get the "user tactical" labeling ever-so-familiar to Cold Steel.
Hmm... unless they sell for significantly less that the MSRP, I'm thinking that they are priced a bit high. Just my feeling; we'll have to wait and see both what the quality is, and how much they end up selling for.
Hmm ... Cold Steel is now reselling swords that look similar to the ones Paul Chen's factory turns out ... made in an unspecified factory in China ... priced higher than if you bought directly from Paul Chen ... hmm ... I guess there must be two sword factories in China now, huh?
