cold steel KOBUN thoughts

I have had one. It is a very fine knife with a very good sheath. For the price, it's hard to beat.

That said, I'm going to overstep my bounds here and say I would be very wary of giving a 13yo a 5.5" fixed blade knife. Unless he's a 13-year-old assassin, get him a Mora or a Swiss Army knife. I was thirteen once. It would not have been wise to have given me a Kobun. This all assumes, of course, that he's yet to prove himself to be incredibly responsible with bladed objects. Even still, that particular blades object is basically designed for totally killing dudes.

so would you go with the
Cold Steel 49HTF Mini Tac Tanto Fixed Blade Knife 3-3/4" Plain Blade
over the KOBUN

I would take the mini tac tanto any day.
The kobun sheaths are only designed for tac vest and boot carry,
My experience with all the models sold are either the plastic clip breaks off or the clip stays on the best and the sheath is attached to the blade still when drawn.
It isn't hard to add a spyderco g clip or tec lock to the mini tac and it would be more sheeple friendly that the kobun.

It's a nice knife, though it is rather a combat/defense oriented design rather than a general purpose blade. If the kid has been shown to be trustworthy with a blade, alright, though if you just want to introduce them to the hobby, perhaps a less weaponized blade might be a better choice.
