Cold Steel Locks vs Spyderco Locks

no problem...they're from cold steel so some might think its just a propaganda to get us to buy but they seem genuine. I dont have a cs folder though...might just buy one to try the locks. Dont wanna do that to my spyders though...

just got the dvd from someone. its the older 2004 one i think but the stuff they do is amazing....hrm...

Cold Steel may have some nice stuff in their high end offerings, but they will charge over $300 for something that you can get in Spyderco, Benchmade, or Lone Wolf etc for $100 to $150...

Lockback quality on both Spyderco and CS are excellent to outstanding. Spyderco has a one up on blade steel in many cases, but CS wins on blade length. Both are strong knives. I have problems trusting liner locks and feel better if there's some sort of safety device preventing catastrophic lock failure. Like others, though, I believe every knife needs a bit of testing, including some spine taps. I have no use fer a knife that folds once it's locked.

I would say based on my experiencing in taking these two brands apart to look them over and in many cases rebuild them that they are the two top contenders for consistant lock engagement security, strength and durability. I sure trust them both more than most other makes. There are some that have not impressed me from both but they are few and far between.

STR

I have had both CS and Spyderco. I would rather spend the extra few dollars and get the Spyderco. I think the CS stuff is far over ratted.

I'm betting if you took a Spyderco Endura and put a bunch of them up like monkey bars that you could hang on them just like they showed.

I guarantee you could do it with stuff like the Manix, Paramilitary, Lil' Temp, and others.

I have both Cold Steel and Spyderco. Spyderco is my favorite knife company, period. I do actually enjoy my Cold Steel knives: Recon 1 folder (zytel handle), very sharp and strong reliable lock, kobun, Spike, Urban Pal, 3 inch Vaquero (very sharp knife). You can order their DVD for free on their website...it is entertaining and if taken with a grain of salt, it's pretty cool. I agree, their higher end stuff is pretty awesome, albeit priced in the custom range...would rather give my $ to a custom maker. (Like STR?) :D

I EDC two Spyders everyday...Dodo and Waved D4. I enjoy spydercos designs and ergos much more than CS. Spydercos knives are just more "fun", with different colors, sizes, practicalities, (is that a word?) etc...

why dont spyderco do test like that? is it because they expect the public to already know about them? i mean...videos from cold steel will surely impress those who know little...

i think cold steel locks are excellent but they do over rate their choice of steel...

Pretty hard to objectively compare any two locks between CS and Spyderco. Different locks, different steels, different blade lengths are all factors. I guess you could subjectively see how many people complain about lock failures for both. Which is pretty nil for both...

Do you mean why doesn't Spyderco make videos showing them doing pullups off their knives or stabbing car doors?

Well they have several machines that test their lock strengths they just don't bother to publicize the results. Are they hiding something? Not in my opinion. There is more than one method to marketing your wares. You would be sorely pressed to find many who complain about Spyderco lock strength.

oops....thats what i meant zen. i guess i get the idea. the dvd is just for marketing ain't it? thats its main purpose.

Can you give us an example of that? I'm fairly familiar with Cold Steel's line and really don't know which model or models you're thinking of.

Regarding lock strength, I haven't heard any complaints from either Spyderco owners or CS owners. Again, the only lockups I don't readily trust are liner locks. I like CRKT's LAWKS, but don't have much use for liner locks without first doing some spine whacks.
