Sorry if this has been covered before but I am new here and would like some information. I have been looking for a machete with good steel. Everything I find locally is very questionable so I have not purchased anything. I found a two handed machete made by Cold Steel for sale on ebay. It has a 1055 carbon steel blade and a 20" handle. Has anyone had any experience with these? Recommendations are welcome.

Thanks

Ricky,

I have one of the 2-handed CS machetes, and I love it. I've used it to tear apart blackberry bushes, vines, small saplings, and once, as a makeshift shovel. Carry it in my Jeep. Quite the formidable weapon as well.......It's a great tool/weapon for cheap!

I've actually owned two of 'em, but gave one to a friend for his island truck.

Hope this helps.......

I have one. Mostly bring it out for kicks, but it is useful. Easily worth the $10 it cost. I think it may be the same blade as the Heavy Machete, just with a longer handle. The steel is on par with the average machete on the market. Moderate hardness, plain old rustable carbon steel. Also, like most machetes in it's price range, the owner really needs to put an edge on it, as they are pretty crudely done out of the box.

Haven't tried the two-handed machete but I've had a kukri machete for a couple of years now and have loved it. As was mentioned the edge was pretty rough but with a little bit of work it's become a real chopper. Nice thing with the Cold Steel machetes I've handled is that their blade is much thicker and stiffer than the standard Walmart/hardware store variety you commonly find for the same price.

It is also 1055 spring steel. 3 minutes with a die grinder and its one of my favorites for collecting firewood. I can go through a 2 inch sappling in 1 swing! Holds an edge suprisingly well. During the holidays I used to to clear out a path to my fire-spot in the woods near my folks house, collect wood, and split wood for my folks. Now, with the large flat blade its not really much of a splitter, but after all that abuse the edge was still good and could easily whittle!

Definately one of my favorite 'knives' that I own.

I appreciate all of the comments and advice. I made the purchase on ebay, but I guess I over paid. The minimum bid was $15.95 plus shipping. None-the-less, I will use it and get my money's worth eventually.

Thanks,
RickyB

It's always better to overpay for something good, then to get a deal on something crappy...
