Cold steel "master hunter" question.

yup that makes sense.... thanks for the feedback :D :D :D

Now i just need to figure out why they would charge more for the SanMai III even though the Carbon V seems to be far superior steel .... well except for the rust resistance part :D
The steels used in the SanMai III don't seem all that fancy, i guess the extra cost just comes in the longer manufacturing time to make it that way?

Its a marketing campain, the newer geration of knife owners " want as little maitenance as possible" Every time I have gone to a knife store and seen some young kid buying a knife they always want the stainless version. Im not saying everyone young is like this but my experiance says they havent experianced the value of a good high carbon steel blade yet.

fish4life : Coldwood's description of those pics is correct as far as I can tell. I would add that the MH is sold with a satin finish, not a mirror polish on the blade. You can see the vertical scratch marks in the photo, and the edge is shinier because it's "polished" sharp.

I haven't seen any coated Master Hunters for sale. Each one has been plain "CarbonV" steel. (I'll edit this post with a link as soon as I find it). CarbonV is a basic, simple carbon steel. Not a whole lot of "alloy" in it. Based on many reviews and my own experience, it takes a nice clean razor edge, keeps it, and is easy to touch up when it starts to go dull.

I haven't used any of Cold Steel's SanMai knives, but I haven't heard much good about them :( I think if you want a stainless knife you should look elsewhere. There's much better stainless out there, in very similar styles, for good prices.

The Master Hunter in AUS8 has had some excellent reviews, as I recall -- two or three bears without a touch-up, if my memory is right. It's an excellent stain resistant steel as heat treated by CS -- the Voyagers use AUS8 and I have no complaints there. But Carbon V is superior IMHO: tougher, easier to sharpen and holds a better edge. The only drawback is rust, but that's not a problem if you routinely dry the blade after use.

For the Master Hunter fans, does anyone know what timeframe CS used the nylon sheath for this knife?
