Cold Steel Military Classic R1 Info Needed

What is strange is R1's are supposed to be AUS8 or san mai III. And made in Japan. Mine is marked "400 series stainless" "Taiwan". I've e-mailed Cold Steel twice to try to determine exactly what "400" series steel is and the best I've got is mine is an older model and that it could be any number of 400 steels, 420,440 etc. So I don't know for sure what it is. It really looks nice and handles well. But I've never seen anyone else post theirs was made of anything but AUS8 or SAN MAi. Maybe I have a rare collectors Item;) . ANy body else seen one marked this way?

No its the Micarta handle and all. It's the R1 its just when you read the fine print under the R1 military classic title that it gets weird.

I've got an R1 (Aus 8) and another on the way and an ODA in Carbon V. While I haven't used them a whole lot yet, they are excellant knives. I was reading through an old tactical knives and found a story on Cold Steel's lineup and it said that the R1 had "400 series" stainless steel. This is the winter 1995 issue, page 44. So apparently the steel has changed over time.

I just came across this thread and I was wondering if Cold Steel ever changed the sheath on the R1. I bought one a few years ago and the sheath I got was pretty cheap thin leather. The leather was about 2mm thick if I recall right.

I have 2 that I have bought within the past month- the older AUS 8 and a San Mai one, both have leather roughly 3mm thick(measured at the belt loop) and both look to be pretty good quality but the San Mai one has a stiching error on the sharpening stone pouch. Both are scary sharp and I am very, very happy with them.

You could definately describe the sheath I had as floppy. I wasn't even close in stiffness to a real Randall sheath. I wonder if I got one in the bad batch.
