Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 help

I recently purchased a cold steel recon 1 in the mini variant(3inch blade) off of eBay. When I received the knife yesterday in the mail and I love it. The only problem is that I've heard cold steel knives should be very strong and lockup tight. I've seen people baton the recon 1 mini through a thick log and still have no play. So I expect a tight lockup especially when I haven't used the knife. I noticed that when I flick the knife open with one hand it has slight side-to-side and slight up-and-down play. But, when I use two hands to pry the knife open, it locks up solidly with no play. Is this the knifes fault or should i do something different when opening.

I've never encountered a Tri-Ad lock with variable lockup. I'd ask to return the knife or send it in for warranty service. If the seller won't cover your shipping cost, then you might as well send it to Cold Steel and have it fixed for free (minus the cost of shipping, of course.)

Yup, different lock up depending on opening method doesn't sound right. I'm assuming it is a new knife (IE, you are the first owner) but you didn't explicitly say so in your post. Have you tried fiddling with the pivot? If that doesn't help, send it in. Be aware though that if you do mess with it you might void being able to return it to the seller but CS customer service should take care of it none the less.

Also, make sure there's nothing in the notch in the blade that the lock goes down into. I've had pocket lint and other stuff get in there. The lock didn't work right until I got it out.

Another good suggestion.

I agree with all of the above suggestions.

There shouldn't be any up/down or side-to-side play at all with the Tri-Ad Lock.
