Cold Steel Mini Tuff

I'm kinda the opposite now. Tri-Ad locks have gotten me back into lockbacks and away from frame locks and liner locks. I like the ambidexterity of lockbacks. too.

As far as I'm aware, all locks are ambidextrous. I can actually open and close supposedly "right handed" liner/framelocks with my left hand better than I can open and close a lockback with either hand.

While the lockback has long been the most unreliable and unnecessarily complex system, even if we suppose that those issues have been addressed by this new iteration, the usability of them still remains an issue. The actions of lockbacks are stiff to open due to the constant pressure on the tang whereas other locks either greatly reduce their pressure on the blade in transit or simply remove the pressure altogether (the hawklock). And when closing, someone has to adjust their grip on the knife and then use either another hand or part of your body to put pressure against it.

In a sense, lockbacks feel like slipjoints that lock, where an axis lock knife or liner lock feel much more modern.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. For me to consider a knife an ambidextrous closer, I have to be able to use the exact same motions with either had, mirrored(not just be capable of closing the knife with either hand, but with different muscle motions.) The knife has to be close to a mirror image of itself.

I enjoy this sort of symmetry, and I rather dislike knives that don't have that symmetry these days.

I can understand the stiff action complaint, but I also like the incredibly solid feel of the lockup on the Tri-Ad folders.

I can appreciate the desire for symmetry.

I must also admit I haven't played with a tri-ad lock yet, so perhaps my opinion is premature.

I actually like the feel of the back lock that you describe so it is not an issue for me :)

The knife looks good. Save for the oversized lanyard hole.

Different ones have different amounts of spring tension. The Spartan is very, very stiff for a lockback. The AK-47, American Lawman, and Large Espada are much easier to unlock.

I really don't know. I used to like CS older Tuff Lites (there was a folder with a tanto blade and the other with a spear point one), but those new ones don't turn me on. OTOH, the Spyderco Ladybugs... :D

Yeah. I wish they'd make a hawkbill Ladybug in plain edge.

These to me are a folding version of the CRKT minimalist. I'm going to get one. I've really enjoyed the American Lawman and I imagine the Mini Tuff will find a place in my edc rotation as well.
