Anyone have one of these knives (I guess thats what they are called)? They're made from "Grivory" which is apparently just a fancy zytel/plastic type material.

http://www.coldsteel.com/nise.html

There appears to be no metal in them at all, could one of these things be gotten on a plane in the US by taping it to ones chest or leg or back or something and walking through the metal detector? I'm not asking because I want to try, I'm asking because I want to know if some nutjob might try it and succeed and then hijack a plane.

I kinda want to get one because they are cheap and seem kinda cool, anyone with first hand experience?

Other comments?

My opinion?

Mall ninja stuff.

A guy once told that he was grinding the edge and that those made great training weapons.

Another told that those could be useful for people who needed non-metallic tools for their work. Agreed, but that doesn't work for the push dagger/karambit.

Those things should not be for sale to everybody IMO.

Haha! definitely mall ninja worthy! $10-15 for any knife is prime time flea market swag!

Thats pretty much the appeal for me, and I'm not for restricting the sale of any weapon, but I HATE that good folks are too scared by the authorities (myself included) to try to board a plane with one of these things, but freaking evil people are not, and that puts good intentioned folks at a severe disadvantage, and frankly in sheer danger! I almost wish I didn't know about things like this. I'd feel safer.

What practical application would these have? I can understand a usefulness in areas where metal is prohibited but the designs (as stated in a previous post) seem to not support that function.

In the advertisement they actually tell you they are "undetectable" and can be taped to you! "Our Nightshade™ knives are light enough to be tied, tucked, or taped just about anywhere on one’s person" this is just plane stupid the only thing you could use this for is hurting someone one time after you pass through a medal detector. Like a judge, government official, Pilot. I never bought anything from cold steel before and now I never will. Total bone head product line. The advertisement should have said "Cold Steel making toys for terrorists since 1980"

My brother got me one (tanto) for Christmas. I didn't ask for it and quite frankly think they shouldn't even be for sale. I used a handheld metal detector and it did not pick it up. It can take a very rough edge that would cause a nasty laceration on skin but wouldn't make it through clothes. It is primarily a stabbing weapon though and it does have pretty good penetration. I keep mine under the picnic table outside. That's the only somewhat reasonable use for it. To keep outside as a last ditch emergency weapon. I know other makers who produced plastic knives used to embed a chunk of metal in them for non military buyers. I think this is a great idea and would love to see the douchebag who thought he had an 'undetectable' weapon be tackled to the ground and beaten to a pulp by security. My two cents.

Any terrorist or self-respecting mall ninja would know a good obsidian blade will get past the detectors as well.

You people all need to get a grip on reality. 9/11 only happened because of the mindset of the passengers on the planes. It won't work again. Sheer stupidity to act like a plastic knife is a horrible thing that you want banned. You are all talking like gun grabbers.

I could make a dagger out of plexiglass, PVC, Glass, & dozens of other materials that would be undetectable with metal detectors.

Ban everything!

Exactly right. If one had a mind to, he could just break a wine bottle on a plane, and LOOK OUT! Deadly sword!! So the "ban it" stuff is unwise, cause if that goes through, guess whats next.

It's true. In good old days, any motivated asshole could make a knife out of anything. But with those, you just have to be an asshole.

I don't want those banned, I just don't see the point of selling them.

For guns, there is recreative shooting and hunting. But what's the point of those knife like objects?

I have the feeling this will be moved to W&C soon...

First off, I agree with Rat. You guys need to get a grip and quit whining about what kinds of edged weapons should or shouldn't be sold. Next you'll be talking about "military assault knives" that need to be banned or some such crap.

One of the things I think I remember reading in a Cold Steel catalog was that the Nightshade was good way for someone to put a weapon in every room of their home without spending a ton of cash on knives. You know, use it to fight your way to your real weapons. I can see where that would appeal to a home-defense minded person on a limited budget.

I used to have a Delta Dart a few years ago, but sold it to a friend who wanted it more than I did. It was cheap and I'm sure it would really suck to get poked with one in the face/throat area.

Well, if ya dang ask me, I think everyone on a plane should be armed, no hijackings will take place when everyone on the freaking plane has deadly potential!

"weapon control" laws only keep weapons out of law abiding (i.e. decent) peoples hands. They do virtually nothing to deter criminals from obtaining weapons (and in some cases make it easier for them to get them).

I didn't mean in my first post to insinuate that I think they should be banned or modified or anything of that nature, in fact, please US gov't re-legalize switchblades/autos/dirks/gravity blades. Its SO stupid for these things to be outlawed and in my opinion unconstitutional!

I just wanted some opinions on these blades, and now that someone mentions it, they probably aren't good for anything but keeping as a last ditch SD weapon, and I don't believe in SD (Jesus' whole "turn the other cheek thing") so I don't think I'll be getting one. But keep up the banter!

Keep a knife on yourself. Cheaper.

I just question the ethics of making them. I agree if someone wants to hurt someone than they will. Hell I could get a Bic pen in anywhere and kill the hell out of someone if I had the inclination to. But items like these are designed to hurt someone after passing through a security check point nothing else and surely not at home SD. Everyone in here would agree that at home if you are worried about SD get a gun. If you can't afford a gun than a good sturdy club is better than any plastic knife. Go to the store get a fiber glass axe handle and lean one up against every door frame in the house. More affective and cheaper too.

You are reminding me of a comic I saw years ago (pre 9-11) who said "I'm travelling all the time. I'm really afraid of terrorists, so I always carry a bomb with me. After all, what are the odds of their being TWO bombs on the plane"?

Back on topic, I have one of the tantos in a prior configuration (different plastic but probably not that different) and it would work to stab but not cut. The poster who said if these are meant to be used as weapons they should have a different design (instead they mirror the dimensions of the CS lineup) has a good point, however one useful thing is they DO mirror the dimensions of the CS lineup, personally I was curious to see how the tanto shape and size worked in the hand and found out for 6 bucks. Doubt I will use the thing for anything but a low risk purchase.

Carrying one of these would lower your risk of detection but no doubt HUGELY increase your risk of incarceration if detected.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with making them.

The mindset of needing any justification for the possession or creation of a knife/gun/etc is just plain wrong.

Justification?

I think that a company who makes weapons that are DESIGNED to get into places where there shouldn't be any weapons (special dispositions are taken for that, money is invested in expensive machines to detect weapons) should justify themselves, especially when anyone can buy them.

Why would you want to buy those anyway?

Don't know what is worst. Making them or buying them?

They're fun to play with while watching TV.
