This is a complete BS post.Cold Steel is (was) reali respectable company and i have some of theirs models since '90. When i saw model ODA in store for a half price i imedietly buy one. Unfortunately, price marks quality. Knife looks good but steel is realy, realy bad.
Knife wasn't sharp enough. When i try to resharpen it (with Lansky) there no use. Blade after few cuts stays dull.
I thing that is something going bad in production of steel. Krupp's steel shouldn't be that low quality. When i saw stamp "Made in China", all becomes clear as summer sky. This is sad what such company doing his products. Also VG-1 isnt such bad steel but has no compersion with aus-8. Looses sharpnes much faster and gets stamps when knife touches some liquid. This is 50% worse than production before. So it is the price.
Say Heah Melt, I dunno if the O.D.A. was ever made in the AUSa. But I do know it was made in the CarbonV, because I have one. It's a awesome knife and design, It's similar to the S.O.G Design of the Vietnam Era. I like my Ka-Bar U.S.M.C. Fighting/Field use knife. But I don't care that the hand gaurds get loose on the newer models. I have a few W.W.2 Vintage Models that are more solid. In that case I do like my CarbonV O.D.A. better. But then came Ethan Becker, when asked to improve the U.S.M.C. Fighting knife, he certainly did. He designed the BK-7. I only have my O.D.A. as a Safe Queen since it was made out of a very good steel, and Camillus use to make all the U.S.A. made knives for C S. Plus the steel is very similar if not the same (zknives.com) and I think the tang is alot stronger on my BK-7 than on my O.D.A. Oh, the O.D.A. also was made in the San Mai 3. But knowing what I know today, and if I had a choice to take one of the three knives into battle, there's no question in my mind I would choose the BK-7, Although I like my Recon Scout's which I have two in the CarbonV and a S.R.K. But because the 1095 CroVan is as good as the CarbonV, I almost bought the whole line of Becker's, over a few year period, and I made some nice sets pairing them off. I think you would be just as happy with the BK-7 as you would with the O.D.A. if it was still made, Their discontinued. The other day I get a 2008 Fall catalog for Cold Steel's Special Projects division in the mail, and on page 77 in the "close outs" I see an ODA, such as this:
![]()
and the catalog states the blade steel is AUS 8. The thing is, everywhere else I can find this particular knife on-line says the blade steel is that Krupp Stainless steel that Cold Steel is using now. So does anyone know if there ever were any Cold Steel ODA knives made out of AUS 8 steel, or is this a catalog misprint? Also, is Cold Steel's Krupp Stainless steel as good as Cold Steel says it is?
Say Heah Melt, I dunno if the O.D.A. ....
Oops, Sorry Marcinek, Me Bad.psst. melt opened this thread 7 and a half years ago, and hasn't been here in over a year.
Oops, Sorry Marcinek, Me Bad.
Thanx, , ,Your intentions were good!
Cold Steel manufactures (or, for you sticklers out there, contracts the manufacture of) plenty of perfectly functional knives and self-defense tools. They're not all perfect and the company's marketing practices are sometimes aggressive, sometimes silly, and sometimes confusing, but Lynn Thompson is not the frigging antichrist. The rabid hatred of Cold Steel on this forum has gotten really annoying.
