Which machete would you guys say is the better, cold steel or tramontina?
I'm thinking of ordering one or the other. thanks

Ontario if the superiour choice. I have a cold steel and I like it. I have not tried a tramontina yet.
Just remember, which ever brand you end up with it will require more some sharpening.

I agree Ontario is definitely better than both.

And made in the good ole USA.:D
The cold steel machetes aren't too bad I have a couple, but I steered my buddy into an Ontario 12" instead of the weird ass cold steel "barong" machete he was looking at.

I like the Tramontinas better than the Ontarios and Cold Steel machetes and I bought all three within a week of each other. You are going to have to reprofile all of them anyway, and if you have big hands you will have to bust out the sandpaper and/or dremel to make the Tramontina fit you better, but for $6 it blows the others away in my opinion. All that being said, I handled a new Condor Machete the other day that was shaving sharp right off the shelf and I really liked the way it felt even better. I will be ordering one of those soon!

loki67,lol the 12'' barong is the one i was wanting.:) I saw it in smkw
my brother has a 18'' tramontina and it's been a good machete. i just checked out the ontario machetes smkw's website. seems like the ontario is
getting the most nods.

I've been using a Tramontina 'panga' style machete since 1988. It's been a good performer.

I've owned an Ontario military type machete since 1995; also another good blade.

It would be hard to choose between them.

Hey Guys...

Tramontina hands down..

The new Cold Steel Machettes are utter garbage....

A friend was chopping wrist sizes pieces of green wood that looked as if he was chopping steel pipes....

I like the ontarios, it'llneed a little sharpening but it;s a solid work horse with a good carbon blade

tolly, i like the looks of the condor's but at forty bucks it's a smiget high
(i be poor):D
and with normark's reply on cold steel now i'm thinking ontario or tramontina

I can't speak for the CS but Tramontinas are good. Ontarios are better for woody brush as they are heavier. For lighter grasses and leafy vegitation I prefer the Tramontina. Mac

Cold Steel and Tramontina are both good. Ontarios are a mixed bag. It seems they are occasionally too hard and brittle for typical machete use. The heavier ones are only about as heavy as the new CS models. We're talking about .125" thick max, which counts as a heavy machete. The lighter, less expensive Ontarios (closer to .080" thick) are good for light brush and grasses, but the ones I've seen have way too acute and thin an edge for heavy work. CS offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Tramontinas are probably the cheapest and good workhorses.

Just about any machete will need edge work before use. CS seem to be the worst. Fortunately, machetes are typically on the soft side and easily filed.

I agree,I have an ontario,18" holds a good edge but I broke the first one choping a small hardwood, they replaced it no prob.I think the 12" model would fare better,

I also own a cold steel Kukri, one of the $15 ones, easy to sharped and holds a good edge.

I really like the tramontina for the money, and though softer, think the steel they use is pretty Ideal for a machete.

Tramontina. Have had several for years and no problems. CS used tosell Tramontina machetes.

Of the two , Id go tramontina

but given the choice , Id go Okapi over Tramontina

it depends a lot on what you can lay hands on
