I have been using the cordura sheath (from bowie machete) with my Natchez bowie for a while with no issues. CS replaced my faux cocobolo handle version with the black micarta handle version a few months ago. I decided to test out the new sheath that comes with it. Slide the knife in and out several times casually without making any effort to press the spine against the sheath. Test on paper. Razor sharp knife was dulled instantly. Tears the paper in places . View the edge under strong light shows dull spots in places reflecting light.

What on earth do cold steel put in their securex sheath? Glass? I cut wood, cardboard, paper and plastic with the knife and it retained its newsprint slicing sharpness. Yet the sheath dulls it faster than anything out there. Isn't it self defeating to ship the knife with such a sheath? Very disappointed.

I sharpened a GI tanto a few weeks ago and not thinking slid the knife back in the Sheath. Pulled it out one last time before going back to the customer and it was about as sharp as a butter knife. Wasn't even my knife and I wanted to throw the Sheath in a wood chipper.

yep. besides the dulling.....

if you are using your knife and dont put it back in perfectly it will cut the sheath inside and then scratch the crap out of your knife. granted a user getting scratches isnt a big deal but its just annoying it cant be used without being very careful with it. its a worthless sheath for carry and use. for collecting and being very careful i guess its okay.

This is no exaggeration. It is that abrasive. This is evident from the scratches on the brass guard that the part of the sheath rubs against.

Maybe CS will chime in on this thread..., hopefully they can decide on something better..

Nope, they have repeated time and time again that there is "no known issues" with secure-ex sheaths, essentially calling all the people who have issues with them liars.

That makes sense. I bought a Master Hunter not too long ago, and I would get it razor sharp, take it out in the woods and not use it, and it would be dull when I got home. I suspected the sheath might have been to blame. It's a shame because I love the knife.

Yup TOTALLY !

I have really gone off my fixed blades because of this craziness . . . until I can unrivet the halves and insert some copacetic layer or make my own sheaths.

The exception seems to be my Super Edge. Actually I have two now; one is destined to be ground to a double bevel plain edge soon as I get around to it. I carried the brand new one the last two days in my pocket standing up and working all day and riding the bicycle to work it was in my pocket. In and out of the sheath many times cutting stuff. The plain edge near the tip is still sharp.

Hear you go Cold Steel . . . this is not staged these are photos of my knives sitting out on tables, not in their sheaths. I sharpened them hair whittling . . .
. . . but . . .
NOW WHAT THE HELL DO I DO WITH THEM ? ? ?
I can't put them back in their sheath or the edge will be ruined. So . . . there they sit . . . waiting for a miracle to happen :Me to make a couple of sheaths.

I made some cardboard/duct tape sheaths to protect the tips, and edges of my FGX knives when I store them in a drawer with other stuff. Sounds weird, but works very well.

I noticed that the grease used on the blades from the factory gets caught inside the sheath and will catch any debris or sand and then
put more and more scratches if our not real careful to clean the blade good before sheathing. Also they dull the blade.

I purchased 3 brand new O-1 Laredo Bowies and noticed sheath drags against the left side or flat of the blade and leaves scratch marks each time the knife is drawn. So I tried the already scratched knife with the two remaining sheaths and they exhibit the same exact problem. Must have been a burr in the mold when they made the sheaths. You can actually hear the sheath scratch against the blade as it is drawn. But when looking into the sheath with flashlight you can't see anything.

How long are your blades there? I have a couple of leather sheaths around that size that may work. One is a Bone Collector, and the other a Buck. I used the Buck for my SM3 Ultimate Hunter until I got a Spec Ops Mini Sheath.

A decent leather sheath isn't that difficult to make. Never cared much for composite sheaths or holsters for the pistols.

This is evidence that the plastic material they use may actually be abrasive. I also have noticed a couple of light horizontal scratches on my Natchez now that weren't there before I tested the sheath.
