Cold steel please fix your securex sheaths for the last time.

I always hate hearing about this. I love these sheaths, they're secure and they dont bother my skin like nylon cordura. But this is a grievous fault.

Yep I've seen this across various brands and companies have been slow to respond.

Nope, they have repeated time and time again that there is "no known issues" with secure-ex sheaths, essentially calling all the people who have issues with them liars.

they have to know many are complaining. many of their customers and fans are complaining and have been for awhile.

what is the secure ex made of? not sure if it's a glass filled nylon but that would be my guess. course cold steel seems to not want to tell anyone, guess it's a secret. i know i wont buy another secure ex sheathed knife unless i can get another sheath made for it easily. i learned my lesson already on it.

It's a GRN.

They know, but near as I can tell, they just don't care. They keep pretending that the incidents are all very rare and isolated, or trying to pass the blame to the user by implying/hinting that people who have the issue must be drawing their knives by ramming the edge against the sheath prior to drawing and if you'd just draw the knife properly it wouldn't be an issue.

i don't see the reason to ignore it. other makers have fixed the same issues long ago. that argument of use the sheath right is kinda silly, but so be it.

appreciate your feedback, thank you.

So here's something interesting; I just got a Bird & Game, which is one of the new 2016 released models. The sheath caught my attention as looking and feeling a tiny bit different. After testing with a fresh edge against older Secure-Ex sheaths, it seems this new one has less glass in the material. It's definitely softer and doesn't appear to harm the edge. It even sounds different when the edge bites into it. The handle plastic seems softer as well, in comparison to the Spike handles which also dulled edges.

I actually came here hoping to find out some more info regarding the new sheath material, whether all sheaths would be updated, only to find this thread.

It seems the only 2016 models that come with a Secure-Ex sheath are Bird & Game, Recon Tanto 3V, SRK 3V, Finn Hawk and Recon Hawk. It would be great to hear from anyone that owns one of these models, especially the Recon Tanto and SRK 3V, which may shed some light into whether old sheath designs were also updated or it's so far exclusive to new designs.

I think it'd make sense for all sheaths to be updated to the softer material eventually, as it's likely cheaper to produce.

I purchased 3 brand new O-1 Laredo Bowies and noticed sheath drags against the left side or flat of the blade and leaves scratch marks each time the knife is drawn. So I tried the already scratched knife with the two remaining sheaths and they exhibit the same exact problem. Must have been a burr in the mold when they made the sheaths. You can actually hear the sheath scratch against the blade as it is drawn. But when looking into the sheath with flashlight you can't see anything.

well thank you...same problem here. Laredo is a beauty but the sheat is downright crap. scratches all along my blade. if you pay as much for a Laredo here in europe you'd expect more quality. customer service didnt respond as im used to.
facebook Always tells me to write customerservice...i never had a single respons on any question.

to get ontopic. my secure sheats dull the blade's as well.
i had to order all custom sheats for all my CS knives

i don't see the reason to ignore it.

All I can think of is Cold Steel is afraid if they admit there is an issue with the sheaths, they'll be inundated with people demanding refunds/replacements for knives "damaged" by the sheaths, or demanding replacement sheaths. Dunno, that's the only reason I can see for them being so adamant that the issue doesn't exist.

I am glad to have read this information. Looks like I will do my best to avoid any CS that come with those sheaths in my future purchases.

This Securex debacle was pointed out by Virtuovice on Youtube years ago... Super hard abrasive... This is why I never buy recent vintage Cold Steels, only the old ones with nylon/leather sheaths, although the San Mai III Trailmaster I had from Amazon still came with a good Nylon sheath.

Mind you, with any kind of dust, all Kydex sheaths tend to do the scratches, just not the edge dulling. I could never figure out the popularity of "hard" synthetic sheaths, since cheap nylon ones, with rubber spacers, often do so much better....

The early super hard super dry beige leather of Falkniven did some amazing scratching too...
