Cold Steel Products

Since you're all discussing different makes of knives...I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice !
I'm looking for a pocket knife thats fairly small, around 3" blade, with a carbon steel blade. The only company that I know for sure is getting good reviews for quality (important!) is Benchmade but the model im looking at, the 705, isnt made with the M2 option......From what I have read, M2 is the steel im looking for!
Any advice on other companies that may do similar models to the 705 but with an M2 blade and of high quality??????

There is a BM 705 made with M2 steel with a boron carbide coating and carbon fiber handle slabs. It was a limited edition forum knife. Good luck finding one, I've been trying for months.

Yep, most of the leads I have followed have led me to "limited edition, good luck finding one". Are there any other good manufactureres that I should look at apart from BM?

do you absolutely need the M2? D2 is just slightly less tough and is availible in many iterations of the 705

www.cabelas.com has a Benchmade Mini-Griptillian with D2 tool steel. I think this would fit what you're looking for pretty well. Grips have a very good reputation and it's a D2 blade, the size you want, and an AXIS lock for under $70 bucks. Hard to go wrong there.

Cold Steel's Voyager line and some of their Carbon V knives are ok. The claims made on their videos are deceptive, and are aimed at people who probably don't know a whole lot about knives. Cold Steel ripping off the designs of custom makers is enough to make me stop purchasing them. I hate Lynn Thompson and his marketing tactics, but he is a good businessman.

This dvd i just got is stupid as hell. two dvds with a fat shmuck doing the same stupid cuts over and over. Boring and unimpressive. DVD ensures i will never ponder buying any coldsteel products.

About the weight issue:
Take a good look at his legs. They are solid muscle!

He used to train as a boxer and still has a gym in the back of the Cold Steel building.
When he reviews tapes he walks on a treadmill, in the gym.
He fights in Dog Brothers competitions.
He routinely trains with martial artist hall of fame inductees. Like Felix Valencia. http://www.suarezinternational.com/2005classes/felixvalencia.html
I don’t know, maybe he has a medical condition.

About the Lynn Thompson bashing:
He is more of a Type “A” personality than I normally feel comfortable with but respect him for being passionate about what he does. He also shows guts by taking the big risks with the business, like offering a WIDE variety of items. From combat shovels to spears; bowies to boot knives; utility folders to impact weapons, he sells stuff few people, if any, are willing to deal with.

Do I admire the man? I don’t know him well enough.
What I do admire is he is willing to admit knives can be dangerous. All the while, showing how capable there are in everyday tasks. He talks big but he walks big too.

Quite unlike the camo wearing posers, who NEVER served a day in they lives, calling their wares “tools” while doing the wanna-be-Rambo routine.

BTW, the sheeple already fear knives, even IF they hear Lynn Thompson, he’s not telling them anything they don’t already know.

BTW2 Yes, the More Proof DVD does get boring after awhile.

To acolonelofcorn: Please don't take this personally.
To everyone: Sorry, I've heard this bashing too long to keep silent any longer. We are ALL entitled to our own opinions but if we are going be be insulting, we should at least have informed opinion!
I'm just tired of the hate.
One should not be a jerk when saying how someone else is a jerk.

gonna mention the leg thing too. And he moves plenty fast. Sure, his technique with swords in general is atrocious... but I doubt he's ever trained with them and they're heavier than usual, not to mention not very decently balanced (some are good, some are bad, again - product by product basis).

I own a Kobun and a Chinese War Sword. They're not great, but they're quite solid and decently priced through other dealers.

Don't associate the man with the knife.... that's just stupid. The knife can be judged irrespective of who markets it... hell, you could probably take a Strider and have a talking, drug addict bear and it'd still be a good knife.

I thought his knife stabbing and slicing techniques to be facinating at first but as the dvd ran on I began to wonder when it would ever end. One of the longest commercials I've ever endured. :(

Also, the dvd would have been a lot more interesting if there was more commentary.

For example when they were doing the spine wack tests there should have been a voice-over explaining the importance of lock strength and a close up of the knife spine. Someone not knowedgable about knives might think at first that they were wacking the blade end. Not everybody is as savvy as bladeforum members.

Just my 2 cts.

That looks great, thanks for the info.
Is D2 *really* just as good as M2?

..D2 is a very good knife steel combining good edge-holding ,moderate-good stain resistance(11.5 Cr.) but technically somewhat brittle and not quite as tough as M2(less Molybdenum)For what it's worth ,I have a BM710HS(M2) and still plan to get the BM806D2,that's how much I like both steels.Hope this helps. :)

Well, like many others have said, I like the Carbon V steel a lot and trust any of the knives with a Carbon V blade. I also have experience with a VOyager folder and the large Bushman; both held up fine and did their jobs well. I use the past-tense for those knives because the Bushman was a survival class issue, which had to be returned at the end of the course and the Voyager, while a beloved folder (my first) didn't have quite the features I wanted in an EDC. But, all things considered, I like many of CS's products, so long as they are purchased as seconds or from a cheaper dealer.

Cold Steel knives with "Carbon V" blades are made by Camillus from pretty good Carbon steel. I have never heard anyone use one and not say they were very good.

I like the Voyagers, although their blades (AUS8) are a little below my preference.

They make a whole line of "sub zero quench" 420 steel knives which really makes all of their hype sound dumb. It's really not good stuff for a $40+ knife.

Medical condition: Doughnut addiction
strong legs- to get to the fridge faster. could be he just has a really slow metabolism.
Annoying, boring, meaningless, Bull Sh!tting Sales pitch with "0" credibility.
Lynn Thompson= Schmuck telemarketer.
Cold Steel= Marketing Company, not a Knife manufacturer.
Customer who spends $399.00 on a knife from cold steel= Idiot. :p

Clint Simpson- caught checking out a fat mans legs? Wishing that he was into european style bathing suits?

I wouldnt pay over $50 for anything they sell. I own the cheaper ti lite and a recon tanto. Very satisfied with both. (the linerlock on the ti lite is the best I've seen on folders under $100) Took a close up look at a cold steel katana today. Very disappointing. They should be half that price, at the most.

You mention wanting M2 steel. . . was there a specific application you you want this knife for that requires it? If not, there are other comparable steels that are a little bit more common, and could make your search a lot easier.

Can you be a touch more specific in what this knife is for, so we can better tailor a suggestion?

CS fixed blades are "ok" there folders are passable quality imho, certainly a step down from BM/spyderco/etc, if ya can get a good price, and dont mind not having a top notch folder, CS is "ok". imho the ti lite is the only decent folder in the line. i would never pay over $150 or so for anything with CS stamped on it, irregardless of model/etc.

the owner of CS is just into hype, bunch of crap imho. waist of time watching the DVD's/etc imho. if the stuff is so great why the very limited warranty? cause its not so great imho.

Agreed with the previous post. With benchmade's warranty that pretty much means "go ahead, try and destroy it, we dare you", cold steel's warranty on knives they practically imply are indestructible in the videos is suspect. 3/4 of their stuff is way overpriced imo. But I do consider the ti lite, voyager, vaquero, recon tanto, and trail guides great deals.

Since I started this thread a few weeks ago, I have used a Cold Steel Recon 1 , plain edge for an EDC, I must say IMHO its not that bad of a cutting tool. I would not compare it to Benchmade, which is a far superior tool, including their warranty. But for the price, the Recon is a decent value.
I cant help to get over the fact that the Recons 1 locking mechanism, the "Ultra lock" is quite similar to Benchmade's "Axis Lock"

I am switching to my Benchmade 550 though, smaller more stout of a blade. :footinmou
