I just got my recon 1 with the new steel but I just have a minor complaint. Why does the edge not go all the way back if there's a sharpening choil built into it?

Yes, it's moronic. It's like that on all the Recon series, not just the new XHP blades. Seems to be an error in design, it really makes no sense.

This appears to be a thing on almost all their models with a blade of more than 4 inches in length. Could be about laws and the length of the cutting edge. The only exception I can think of now is the Hold Out series.

Just about any Cold Steel blade that is not flat ground will look like this. Not sure why but this is my experience and hence why I usually only buy CS's with flat ground blades (Voyager clip point, Recon 1 XL clip point).

Here's the picture. I hope cold steel can give some insight about this. Why put a sharpening choil if the edge doesn't go all the way back?

Apart from that, how do you like the knife? :)

It's a good knife the tip came ever so slightly bent at the sharpest point. The edge suffered some rolls after cutting boxes. the edge might have been slightly burnt from the factory but after sharpening the edge using the sharpmaker, it didn't occur anymore. In my opinion it holds an edge and sharpens like my southern grind bad monkey made with 14c28n.

Maybe that's where the lockback locks the blade in the closed position? If not, maybe it's a dud...google images shows many of the knives with that choil meeting the cutting edge.

I've never posted here before, but I have two HO IIIs and they're both like this. The edge comes closer to the choil on one than the other, but neither actually meets it.

I have the same thing on my AUS8 Recon 1. It's annoying, as is the crappy Teflon coating (now removed)! But the knife is great, I'm looking forwardto getting the CTS XHP Recon 1.

Just curious, does the XHP Recon 1 still come with the same over tight pocket clip with the cheap black paint? One of the prime reasons that prevent me from EDC my AUS8 Recon 1 and AK-47 more often is the clip. Very difficult to extract and replace. I know one can easily bend it a bit in a vice but come on, with all the available technology, can't CS come up with a nice clip like the most other makers... I know the Tat*nka is no match for the Triad-Voyager, but its pocket clip sure does beat CS's any day of the week...

The blade is DLC but the lock and pocket clips are the painted Teflon! The paint on the lock is already chipping. IMO it shouldn't be $100. Maybe $80 from the retailers

You think the price should be $20 less because the lock and clip aren't DLC? Seriously? You DO realize the AUS-8 Recons, with the lower quality steel and no DLC at all ran for $70 from retailers, and was generally considered a really good buy, right? You think they should switch to a super steel and the best coating option there is, and only charge $10 more? I admire your optimism.

I just can't help to compare it spyderco's that are DLC coated like the manix 2. on the manix 2 at the same price, you have spacers that are DLC coated as well. although the pocket clip is painted. and speaking of DLC coating. compared with ZT, Spyderco and other USA made produced knives that I have, Cold steels DLC is a thinner we'll see how that holds up overtime.
