Cold Steel Recon 1 - Full Stripped

This blemish is caused by the stamping machine used to manufacture the liners. It illustrates the difference in the quality of the CS against the BM. BM knives liners are laser cut to fit, then tumbled to remove the sharp edges from flashings. Do the math on the cost difference between a laser cutter that does maybe 30 liners a minute against a stamping machine that does 4 a second. Do you think that justifies the selling price difference between the Recon against the BM710?

To borrow the sentiments of Clint Eastwood (sort of), there's nothing wrong with cutting corners, as long as it's the right corners that are cut. I don't think this shows the difference in quality between other knives and Cold Steel; to me, it's not important to have a laser cut, polished liner. If one buys a Sebenza for five hundred bucks, I'd expect the liner to be laser cut, polished and perhaps a few gems installed to boot.

Gerber and CRKT have taken steel that used to be used solely as liner steel and are now making blades from it! But no one really cares what the steel quality is of the liner. In the same fashion, I'd rather have CS cut corners and stamp the liners rather than charge more or lower the blade steel quality.

I have several Recons and love them. And though CS doesn't always get high praises from true blue knife afficianados, it's also rare to hear bitter complaints about them. In fact, for the price, a CS Voyager is mighty difficult to beat and the Recon 1s can really grow on people, too. With so many knives coming out crap now, it's great to see that CS isn't joining the group.

Mine (Partial serrated spear point) had some pits which obstructed the movement of the pins and I cannot unlock with one finger. Never had that problem with my older generation Recon 1s.

Still assuming you get a Recon 1 without issues on the lock it is a great deal for the money.

Cotherion,I've found that when this happens I have to twist the bolt or pin to release the lock to open it but mine has never locked open as you have found.

I contacted Cold Steel about this problem, even provided pictures and a link to this post, two weeks ago.Still nothing and again last week,I resent my email.Still no response. Thinking I should give them a ring since it's still under warranty and since it's clearly a defective product that they should replace.

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to decide between a Recon and a HK/BM Nitrous for about a month now. I'm not a big fan of black teflon blades because they usually look like crap after about a week. The Boker M-Type has held up well, but it has some other coating on it.

Thanks again. I believe I'll go with the Nitrous... unless there's something wrong with that knife I'm not aware of.:jerkit:

It sometimes works when I do like what you mentioned but later it will stick again. I changed my SS liners wth an old one from a 440a blade and zytel handled recon of mine and now it's a beauty. I think the new ones (taiwan) is more prone to this problem as my AK47 also had this problem. The older productions had no such problems.

Cold Steel must remedy this or soon they will lose too many customers. Replying email is a must for their customer service and they should not keep silent about your issue.

(I'm not in the US and replacing a defective product is not an option for me. Pity.)

This is why I rather pay the $103 bucks for the BM710D2 tahn the $63 for the CS Recon. Prices are from www.knifeworks.com . For the diff you get much better steel ( D2 against aus8 ) and the precision built from BM. But most importantly you get a product that is made with pride in the US.

You will be getting a very nice piece of folder made with precision and fit. Its got Ti liners and very good steel in 154cm. Its a very slick piece although the initial opening is a bit stiff. The blade is thin with a good geometry. I got mine from Roger of www.knifeworks.com . You will not regret this decision.

I'm actually looking at either the SOG Pentagon Elite II or the Spec Elite II. I'm waiting for the VG-10 version to come out and I like the fact that it's 5 inches of 0.16 inch thick steel folder for around 70 to 80 bucks.

Although D2 steel Benchmade is tempting, I haven't owned a Benchmade yet and have only heard good news about it, the price is my only issue. Perhaps a decent 2nd hand one will come out in the for sale section :)
