Cold steel recon 1 vs cold steel ak 47

I had to get rid of my Recon 1 as the handle was just too skinny. Lots of blade, but the thin handles made it difficult for me to use as a work knife. Like you, I have some pretty good sized mitts, and now that they are a bit arthritic, I really want a comfy handle at work. Sometimes I use my knives out on the job all day, to the point where I take them out of my pocket and just keep the knife in my tool bags.

My two favorite work knives (at least for now!) are my Ultimate Hunter and the CS Bushranger. Both have large handles that are lightly sculpted and provide a great grip for sweaty, tired hands for all day use. For size reference, when I hold the Ultimate Hunter, in my palm, I nearly cover the entire handle, just a little peek of the G10 on the blade side and butt show. Still very comfortable in the hand when in use. It has a GREAT utility design that can be used for all manner of tasks. The Bush Ranger is just a big, heavy duty tank of a knife that is another winner of a work knife.

The AK47 provides a really secure grip even with dirty, sweaty hands. But that same design is nearly impossible to use with work gloves due to its blocky handles. Due to the cut outs on the scales (no doubt intended to secure a good grip) the knife really difficult for me to use if I have to change the grip if I have to have careful positioning of the blade for a cut.

And for me, all the squared off surfaces made it harder than it should be to get in and out of the pocket. No problems getting the knife in and out of the pocket when using the Ultimate Hunter, Bush Ranger or Recon 1 (gone but not forgotten!).

Sounds like the 4-Max or the AD-10 would suit your mitts just fine. :D

Thanks but that doesn't give much assurance to me that I will get a hollow grind if I purchase one. I've seen Recon 1s and American Lawman's listed as hollow ground by some retailers still as well. I suppose I could always contact the seller. AK-47 hollow grind, newer, smoother G10, I'd snatch right now. BTW, I've always wondered this but never asked, is the pommel on the AK steel?
The pommel is aluminum. Here's their product listing. I'm almost 100% certain they're still hollow ground, because Cold Steel changes their listings when they change the grind type. Their AK-47 listing still says hollow ground.

Every Ak-47 I've handled, I'm 80% sure they were counterfeits so I might be biased. But the Recon by far is one of my favorite knives. It's just a comfortable timeless design.

My vote is for the Recon!

You bet! Not quite enough difference in the Ulitimate Hunter and the AD10, but that 4Max has been calling me for some time now. I have a similarly sized knife now, and I love it.

Easy enough to carry in minutes my Jean's and when I have my tool bags on I carry it in my back pocket and it doesn't get lost.

The Ultimate Hunter is very underrated. Excellent work knife /edc. And the ergonomics of the Recon1 are the best of any large folder I have. Also a great work/ edc knife. My satisfaction with my American Lawman has kept me from considering an AK47.
I d get the Recon1, or either the AL or UH.

I'm not into black blades, but I recently found a really good deal on an AK 47, so I finally pulled the trigger. I don't have a Recon, but I had an amazing mini Recon that I gave to my brother.

When I got it in hand I was struck by how the handle enveloped my hand, in a similar way the Spartan would. This seems very safe for hard use, or self-defense. I like it a lot.

This sounds right on the surface, but in reality it is not.

The Recon 1 tanto has a thinner grind for the primary edge that is better for cutting things than the spear or clip points, but the tip profile is less ideal for stabbing than a spear or clip point as it thickens and broadens up more quickly the further you get from the tip. The tanto tip on the Recon 1 is good for resisting damage and abuse, but not for puncturing. Considering how the layperson and tons of people on this forum use their EDC knives, having a stronger tip very well might be a plus.

Meanwhile, the rest of the blade on a spearpoint Recon 1 is worse at slicing through things due to the flat grind and thicker edge. Assuming you can sharpen two straight edges on your sharpener of choice, the recon 1 tanto is probably more practical for EDC. It's also giving you a longer blade and a shorter handle for the same weight than the AK-47.
my recon1 is spear because the spearpoint is really useful to me, i see what you're saying about the edge, its a bit thick
but i really need that curved belly for cutting, that tantos don't provide, however --- nice observation

What the?

Also, the AD10 is the finest knife Cold Steel has put out in a while. I change my vote to that!

LOL... was replying on my phone when it completely froze while I was dictating. Dictating saves me from typing, but the phone can't tell what I want sometimes, and I have to go back and edit. When it froze, I couldn't. So "jeans" became "Jean's". On occasion, that has been a real source of laughter for my boys when they get one of those.

If I didn't have the Ultimate Hunter, I would probably buy an AD10. Hits all the sweet spots for me.

Love it! I too use mobile when I’m on BF, and my autocorrect sometimes makes what I’m saying completely unintelligible.

And what you said about owning a UH, which is why you don’t have an AD10....well I’m in the same boat for the opposite reason. I love my AD10, but if I didn’t have it, I’d probably buy a UH.

I considered the Ultimate Hunter before I settled (not really settling though) for the AD-10. Echoing what has been said by other members already in this thread, the AD-10 is the finest quality CS knife I've ever owned, second only to my AD-15 (and it's a close second). Sad story but I actually am sending my AD-10 back because of blade centering issues. Aside from that, the F/F, action, lock-up, everything still wowed me even with the blade centering being off, and it was the 4th CS I ever handled. I wasn't even shopping for an AD-10 (just couldn't pass up on a deal), but after having one, I think I may end up purchasing one again. Also depends on how much I like the 4Max Scout which is on it's slowwww way to me right now :).
