I don't like Cold Steel's advertising one bit but I've decided to look past the blood splattered catalogs and silly videos and try one out.

Which of the four current Recons would you buy?

I like the looks of the tanto blade but I like the clip-point for practicality and actual usefulness.

Well seeing as both of those will cut and stab things just fine why not get the one that you like the looks of the most.

Which ever blade style you chose get the plain edge, Cold Steels serrations are easily damaged and not easily repaired.

i just got my recon 1 tanto straight edge...ive had it for a day..and im already in love...but be aware....the paint comes of easy...to easily...but other than that i love it....my only concern is when you close it hard the blade hits the g10 handle

It is not paint, the blade is coated with teflon.

I have both the clip-point, and the tanto. The clip-point will be easier to sharpen.

I rally like my new triad Recon-1. Heavy duty and light. I bought the tanto and removed the coating and rounded out the the abrupt corner on the edge and sanded the spot where the pocket clip touches the G-10 lightly (made it easy to use the clip). It's very usable now and has a little bit of personality to my liking. Clip point is great too. I have a 4" Voyager with that length and it's a little pocket sword! You can't make a mistake if you go with what appeals to you.

I think I'll get the clip point because although i like the looks of the tanto better, i find the subtip annoying for everyday cutting based on the last tanto style i bought.

how did you remove the coating?

I have a very thin bladed, flat heat screw driver and a SS Kershaw leek framelock with an S30V blade. I took it apart and just started scractching the stuff off sometimes a lot would come off and sometimes I'd have to scratch a bucnh to get a spot clean. The DLC coating is no joke like the paint they used to use. It took my 2 days working about 2 hours per session to get it done perfectly. Some guys just use paint stripper but I don't like fumes so I scratched it off. Leaves a nice stoneash blade. Here's a shot of me holding it when I finished it. I've got more of the tanto corner ground off sice then and it's really very nice to me.

Boberama, it can literally be scratched off with something like a Vic awl. That's what I used along with some elbow grease. FYI, I have the clip point and it's a well made, nice looking knife.

I liked everything about the Recon 1 except where the thumbstud is located. It was high enough off of the handle that my thumb can slide between the stud and the handle.

Compared to say, a Benchmade 710, I just have to rub my thumb along the handle, and as soon as I feel the stud, I put pressure between the two.

The tanto blade is actually easier to sharpen if you free-hand with a stone. The Americanized tanto blade is just 2 straight blade sections that intersect at (what appears to usually be) a 45 degree angle. There is no curve involved, and for somebody with less than a mastery with free-hand stone sharpening, no curve is a lot easier. For practical use of both the clip-point and tanto blades, there is no real difference, it is basically all personal preference.

Recon 1 Tanto is my next purchase, I had to first check out my axis-lock AK47 I got here on trade. It's awesome.
