Here in nj its illegal to carry a knife over 10 inches in total length or over 4 inch blade, does the cold steel recon 1 meet the legal criteria?
Im really considering buying a recon 1 but i dont want to risk it being illegal (even tho the chances of me ever being checked by the cops are next to none but there is still that possibility)

If it does not meet this criteria what wuld you reccomend over it

Please forgive my bad spelling and grammar im rushin this morning.

EDIT : forgot to say what i use it for.
I use it for work, i cut bags and boxes (only the stuff i cant cut with a box cutter so i use it frequently but not nonstop) and i wanna edc it too.
So i want a working edc

Easy solution: wait for the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 :D

it isnt like a i want 1 cause its cool, i need a new knife cause what i currently use is all screwed up and i need to order it today to get it by monday to use it when i work on tuesday

I think as long as you don't exceed what's required by law, it should be fine.
One thing to be careful though check if your law allows or bans flick knives, all cs folders are, out the box.
If flick knives are illegal get a torx screwdriver and tighten the pivot

other CS's to consider would also be the rajah 3 or AK47

dirks daggers stilettos gravity knives and switch blades are illegal.
If it is deployed with your physical force it is legal
So what does cs classify as

I hate to be the one who says it, but maybe look into a spyderco endura 4 ffg in blue, green, or orange handle. I use knives the same way you do and found the endura out performs the recon in every way. Also why I recomend the colored handles is because from a police point of view, the recon looks like it should be illegal. The recon looks scary, but is still legal, the endura looks like an un alarming working knife. That being said, either knife should serve you well.

I have been heavily considering the endura but i just didnt no if it would last through what im gonna do with it, if u say u do the same and it holds up then ill take ur word for it

this leaves me between the endura (i like the bright colors actually for if i drop it ill easily find it too) or the native, any thoughts?

Also the weight and length of the recon look like it might be a total pain to be taking out and in and out and in and open and close cause even if its a lock back i still 1 hand close all my knives (push the lock in and close it against my leg dont preech safty please iv never cut myself after 2 years of doing it with a buck 110)

That's why I recommended an AK 47 or Rajah 3.
They both under the max length (around 3" blades) and when you tighten the pivot to stop them flicking they can still be deployed lightning quick wave style with the thumb stud.

If gravity blades are illegal then by default all CS folders are and need to pivot tightened.
Agree on Endura. Just suggesting if Cris wants to go CS

I've owned many many knives, and have really used a lot of them pretty hard at work. I've tried the spyderco's and I did not care for them.
I bought a cold steel American lawman and it blew the endura out of the water in terms of durability, strength and cutting.
I even (sledge) hammered the lawman through a 2x4 once. It still has no blade play.
I do have a Recon 1 that I carry quite often as well, but I don't prefer it to my lawman really. The geometry on the lawman is superior in my expierence

i dont intend to use it to hurt anyone at all, as for if i ever needed it for self defence i mean in the moment u can hurt someone all the same with a 2 inch knife as u can with a 5 inch or 10 inch, just whipping it out and waving it around is stupid, if it comes down to defense and thats all u got then ur gonna need to get them by surprise so a huge monster blade isnt very good espically since nj is tough on concealment.

ima work and cut random everyday things with it (maybe some food at lunch) thats all

deploying quick is not only for SD but any emergency situations like cutting a person's sleeve for 1st aid or cutting a seat belt.
To be unbiased there are better knives suited for your tasks than the CS for their price range. (Replied to your other thread)

If you do decide on CS as long as it doesn't gravity flick you should be fine after tightening the pivot you should be fine.

as far as ik the gravity applies to balisongs.

nj law defines illegal by something that open without the force of a user a button or a dropping blade (a balison u can just undo the latch and the knife just falls open with no force what so ever)

Cs's should be fine then.

Something to remember too is that the recon does not have steel liners, just g10. I don't want to turn this into a spyderco vs cold steel thread, but I compared the recon and endura side by side and the blade length is almost the same. The endura has far superior blade steel, I like aus 8, but vg10 is in a different class. I haven't owned a lawman,(think I might buy one) they look a little small for heavy cardboard cutting. A drawback to the endura is the lack of g10, but I like lightweight frn. You are right about the recon, it is a monster in the pocket. Have fun deciding!
