Cold Steel Recon fixed Tanto blade knife...

I don't know if this will help you or not buddy, considering your rainy climate. Mineral oil works fine on knives, it is food safe, and available basically anywhere.

Yeah, right? You don't happen to do custom jobs for others eh? That kobun could use finishing... :D

My apologies to the op. I wasn't trying to hijack the thread. I was merely trying to say that the removal of the black coating doesn't bother me and then I use frog lube clp

If you are able to see closely on the blade you can see i rubbed on some frog lube

Can anyone varify what degree of an angle is ideal to sharpen the Recon Fixed Blade Tanto? Can I run it as a 20 degree angle? Or is it better suited for a 15 degree angle? And whats the factory angle it came as? I would like to keep the blade angle they way it came...

Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard alot of people using the mineral oil. But I am satisfied with the Aegis Daily Cleaning Solution for the needs regarding to rust prevention on my blades. I do not use any of my Tactical to prep any type of food so its all good.
By the way, have you tried mineral oil to lubricate the pivots on your folders or Balisong? I tend to carry the folders and Balisong in my pants pocket, which could feauture lint and other small debris at time. I am curious... how does the mineral oil fare once you apply it (if you happened to use it for lubrication on pivots)? Would you say the mineral pil attracts debris, as in sticking to the oil? Or has it been working out well for you? I am seeking a new bottle of luberication pil for pivots (since the Aegis Daily Cleaner is not meant for such task to my knowledge). I've heard mixed reviews on dry lubes (which I never used before). I realize the luberication topic differs from people to people. So, I am thinking about either getting the Blue Lube from Benchmade or try out the new line of 3 in 1 from WD40.

No apologies necessary. In fact, I encourage others to share their views etc.

By the way, is it a stone finish that you did to the Tanto? Was it a attempt to remove the coating? And what is your opinion about the purpose of the mod you did to those knives?

Your picture reminded me of the first time I tried to sharpen one of my Tanto. I ended up rousing off the secondary edge, and kept failing to revive it. Now it looks like another knife. I still use it, but it turned into a knife which I use to hone my throwing skills lol.

not a stone finish, probably just belt finish of 220 grit or something like that and maybe a buff/polish, honestly I can't recall what I did.
It was an attempt to test my refinish and grinding skills on an existing blade geometry. I've made about 25 knives but this was my first regrind.
I'm also not a fan of the American tanto style and was trying to turn it into more of a traditional Japanese tanto style. I think the regrind makes for a more useful user blade and one that can be sharpened easier. The top spine swedge I put on just to practice grinding a swedge.

Quite frankly, I have stated my reasoning for wanting a coating on my Tacticals several times (seeing that few others also seemed curious as to why I would get.a coated knife...). And to state it once more, my reason on why I like my Tacticals with coating is due to simple reasons such as reflection and protection (no matter how vague of a job a coating does. I just prefer it this way, plain and simple. I know some of you seemed to not care for coating, and thats just fine. I respect their preference and taste on what they seek or want in a Knife.

And no, I am not a military personnel (although all my male side of my family are), nor am I a law enforcement officer. But I do participate on Tactical and other related sessions with my reletives and friends (one of the reason why I got into firearms etc.). I also enjoy Martial Art and hope to get into Bow and Arrows soon.

P.S. I reside in North West. We see fair share of rain throughout the Season. And I also enjoy fishing (although I will take other knives, better suited for the environment). But I tend to enjoy carrying my Tacticals... as they are in my EDC rotation. So a added layer of protection is ideal, at least for me (again, no matter how small of a difference it makes).
It's gonna wear when you use it-no way to prevent it. However, the blade is not polished like the San Mai III version. Even with the coating worn off, the blade will not be reflective.

That said, you may want to try the AK47 field knife instead. The DLC coating is MUCH more resistant to wear, scuffs, and scratches. The Warcraft Tanto is the same way-DLC coated.

I been trying to contact Cold Steel through their customer service email on two occasions and still have not heard back from them
I realize its the Holiday Season, but other companies have replied back within a day or two period. Cold Steel has not replied for over a week lol. Bit strange considering its a question about one of their product that I purchased. Hmm...

I would recommend giving them a call. They have always been helpful to me when I give them a call.

Yes, give them a call rather than using email. Great Customer Service.

You could try Ren Wax, but be sure to buff it out really well, don't want white showing on all that deep black. Use it SPARINGLY. If it doesn't work, BALLISTOL should remove it.
