I'm thinking about getting a CS Recon I at their closeout sale. They have clip point and spear point blades available. So which blade type is better for what?

I'm looking for a general purpose camp knife that will be efficient at slicing and dicing food as well as cutting rope, hoses, etc. Would one blade type be better than the other?

Also, what's the difference between a clip point versus a drop point blade? They look similar.

On the Recon 1 the clip point seems more useful, more belly etc.

I find that in the case of the Recon 1, a clip point is more useful, largely due to the fact that the drop point version is half serrated. As for blade types, here ya go.

Thanks for the link on blade types. That's very useful.

One question of the half-serrated blade, the clip point come in either plain or half-serrated. I was thinking the serrated part would make it easier to cut rope, hoses, etc. and the main negative of a serrated blade is that it's difficult to sharpen. Am I missing any other pros and cons?

I have (or had--might be lost or stolen) the old model Recon in spear point. The clip may have more belly but the spear is a stronger configuration, esp. at the tip, aesthetically I preferred it also. The recons are damned sturdy, whichever blade shape. Oh and I got the 1/2 serrated edge, it does wonders for rope, cardboard, etc.

I picked the clip point because I wanted a plain edge, I'm really happy with the knife. It's quite different to what I usually carry, but it has grown on me.

If the spear point was available in plain edge, that would have been my choice. I really like the way it looks.
